Whatever you might or might not think about spelling or grammar, legibility is non-negotiable.  If people literally cannot see what you have written, ipso facto, they cannot read it.

In writing on CM, by all means, use all the features you wish. There is a different feel to the same image in black and white vs. color, etc.  Color choices can enhance a message greatly.

However, there are limits.  If you use two colors which are very close to each other on the color wheel, there won't be enough contrast for the type to stand out from the background.  Dark blue and black are too close IMO.  So are white and grey. Pink and red. Etc.

People *expect* to see a dark-colored font on a light-colored background.  It's fine to switch them out...but if you choose to, you should enhance legibility in any other way you can IMO.

Font size also affects legibility.  The smaller than normal sizes detract from legibility, but I've been told that the larger-than-normal sizes are harder to read as well. You can use different size fonts if you use color, etc. to enhance legibility...it's a balance, IMO.

Remember, the reader will be looking at what you have written on a computer screen, not a piece of paper.  And too, some CM members are vision-impaired.  I used to use a pink font color until someone with vision problems told me they couldn't see it.  IMO, it's not desirable to exclude people, especially by mistake.

The default typeface is not always especially legible, IMO.  If you choose to use it, fine....but don't exacerbate legibility by also choosing low contrast colors, etc. Likewise, if you use a 'custom' typeface, consider how 'readable' it is.  Again, balance.

Alignment choices also affect legibility.  I think most CM members would find align-right confusing.  Align-left is probably easiest for most people to read, but align-center is lovely and can enhance what is written...just check for balance.  *I* find align-center works best if the message is briefer and not especially 'dense'; it wouldn't be as easy to read a 'list' in align-center, e.g., but a sentence, yes.

Lastly, create negative space -- use paragraghs and such to enhance legibility.

I'm sure there are a whole raft of CM members with graphics expertise, and I'm not one, but I thought I'd mention a few basics.

Even though you no longer use pink (thank all the little font gods for that btw) I still have to enlarge then highlight your posts if I decide to read them. The italic small font blue, is not easy to read.

FYI - I can barely read the little blue print you use.  I also find italics make it more difficult to read, though it looks more formal.  Sometimes, plain is best.

If someone is visually impaired, they get around it by copy pasting  into another programme.
If someone is really worried about what you may be writing, then they will find a way to work around it.
If people cannot accept you for what you are and what you write, and pick on your choices and try to demean them just because it does not suit them, then they are not worth your words anyway.

I don't expect people to treat themselves differently or change because I may have a physical or mental disability.

I'm aware there's a bias nowadays among some members against using the available features on the message boards.  I don't think conformity in style among all who post affects legiibility.  In fact, I happen to find it more comfy to read the boards if I am not seeing page after page of a thread in default.

However, the Op is not just about the message boards...it is about profiles, journal entries, chatroom posts, email, etc. as well.

Wow.  Coming from you, candy, this is extremely ironic, since under one of your previous names, when I said the same thing, you basically said, "I am not aware of any such standards for readability" (paraphrased).  Surely you remember your "Pimping Y/yr Posts" thread??

I participate on a writer's forum and they recently changed the overall look of the website.  They added this horrible electric pink font that's blinding.

It's a forum where people post short stories and novellas and I do not understand why they think anyone would relish sitting at the computer reading that eye piercing text for an hour or more.

Aside from spelling and grammar, font size and color is definitely an issue. Some should really consider toning it down a bit.

I don't care what color people use..or what letter size. Most people just keep it to the preset of the forum anyway

That wasn't really true back in tha day, JustDarkness.  There used to be more 'regulars' than there are now who had a particular 'appearance' to their posts.  This bias in favor of conformity by default -- which I only see as to the boards, oddly -- is just a trend, and like other trends, it will probably shift in time again.

However, the bias for conformity is unrelated to legibility.  E.g., *I* see almost a 'preference' among Doms for black font on a dark blue background when creating a profile. Evidentially it has caught favor as being the 'manly' color combo.  I dunno.  Whatever the case -- it's totally illegible. Worse than having no profile at all.

*Winks* at the.dark.  Hope you and yours are happy, hunni.  Have a great Guy Fawkes Day.

When was that?..sounds so long ago :P
I have been here before...recently rejoined. BUt I can remeber just a few who change layout on the forums when they posted.
It is like a signature.
Some I liked..some were more difficult to read.

Also people play in the beginning with features of fourms and boards..and then get tired of it....leaving it as it is.

I'm just glad you have a darker font and none of the slashy speak. Now i actually try to read your posts. Some of them are not bad. I do wish you would increase the font a little. Not to the huge font you had under a different name but bigger than it is now. But You still come across more serious with the darker letters and choice of font.

Hey, at least your posts don't look like they came off my 15 year old's cell phone, and that you weren't kidnapped and brainwashed by lolcats.  And the slashy S/speak makes my B/brain T/throb.

I used to do my posts in blue so that I could find quoted text easily until CM screwed up the color selector and I tired of having to correct it. In hindsight I see that it may have created issues for those with certain blue sensitivities. I tend to skim posts in italics. It's too much trouble to read the whole post. Same with center justified. Not worth the trouble.
