STAY OF EXECUTION

An attorney got home late one evening, after a very taxing day trying to get a stay of execution for a client, James Wright, who was due to be hanged at midnight. His last-minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed, and he was feeling worn out and depressed.

As soon as he got through the door at home, his wife started on him about, "What time of night do you call this? Where have you been?" And on and on.

Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long, hot soak in the bathtub, still pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks.

While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered it, and was told that her husband's client had been granted his stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight.

Finally realizing what a trying day her husband must have had, she decided to go upstairs to give him the good news.

As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband's rear end as he was bent over naked, drying his legs and feet.

"They're not hanging Wright tonight," she said.

He whirled around and screamed, "FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?"

For more detail: The husband's client's last name is a homonym for the word "right". When she went upstairs to tell her husband that his client was granted a stay of execution, because of his stance while drying she had an unobstructed view of her husband's hanging sack.

So, when she made the comment "They're not hanging Wright tonight."; knowing her view, the husband assumed that his sexually frustrated wife meant his balls weren't hanging in the manner that they should and was making a comment to that effect. This was the cause for his exclamation requesting that she would give him a break.

Humour is the hardest part of any language to get. I have always been esp. careful about telling jokes around friends for whom English is not their first language, until I know them well enough to know that their language ability extends to grasping humour. Honestly, I did not go look at her profile before I typed my response - it was not a complaint about her - i relize it may have sounded like I was accusing her of being a newbie troll, when, really, I was only teasing her, and not about trolling, only about being a newbie in general. The number of posts tends to catch my eye when it gets in the high teens, it always looks like an 'age' to me and makes me do a double take.

Actually, Im, 22, so do not feel bad about having explaind the joke.
And do not worry for a sec - I know you were only joking. Somehow it did not sound serious:)
Though I think most difficoult part of a language is songs. Not nicely sung ones, but those where you can barely understand what they are trying to say. (Because of the loud music and noise and all).
But you are right, one needs a lot more than just some vocabulary to understand a joke.
