newlifenewstart -> Words and how they affect people... (11/5/2008 11:08:54 AM)

I love language. Its really as simple as that. Words that move people, from the humorous to the emotional and all the stages in between. I recently cam across this (see below) and wanted to share it with you all.

Please post your favourate quotes, phrases and words of any description.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

—Marianne Williamson

"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried." --R. W. Emerson

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind...

John Donne

There are many seductive political quotes but even the greatest political quotes are at the end of the day, empty rhetoric so I've opted for this quote by Jean Baudrillard....

“The liberated man is not the one who is freed in his ideal reality, his inner truth, or his transparency; he is the man who changes spaces, who circulates, who changes sex, clothes, and habits according to fashion, rather than morality, and who changes opinions not as his conscience dictates but in response to opinion polls.”

I spent 13 years living in Poland. I can share with you some Polish proverbs.

Under capitalism man exploits man, under socialism the reverse is true.

A good painter need not give a name to his picture, a bad one must.

When the Devil can't make it, he'll send a woman.

Some day's you're the pigeon, other days you're the statue.

When two people fight, the third one wins.

God treats Jack the same way Jack treats God.

He who gives quickly gives twice.

An elephant is a mouse built to government specifications.

Always place your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark.

Every mistake carries an excuse.

No one knows what hurts another.

You never know when someone
might catch a dream from you.
Or something you say may
open up the windows
of a mind that seeks light;
The way you live may not matter at all,
But you never know, it might.
And just in case it could be
that another's life, through you,
might possibly change for the better
with a better and brighter view,
it seems it might be worth a try
at pointing the way to the right;
Of course, it may not matter at all,
but then again, it might.

People travel to wonder at the highest of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars; and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.   St.Augustine 399 A.D.

Bravo, I think I will write this list down.
Can I add, that the older I get, I find what is the MOST
telling is this:  Those that tend to have the sharpest tongues, are the ones
that fall to pieces over the "words" that are spoken to them.

I have yet to find hardly anyone that dishes it out, that can really take it. [:D]

Death and life are in the power of the tongue....Proverbs 18:21.

"I cannot believe that the purpose of life is (merely) to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate. I think it is above all to matter, to count, to stand for something. To have it make some difference that you lived at all. "
Leo Rosten
