Cagey18 -> Senator Palin in 2009? (11/5/2008 6:51:09 PM)

Think I'm kidding?  Not at all.  Here's why the outcome of the Alaska Senate race is so important (other than reaching the magic number of 60)...from electoral-vote.com:

In Alaska, Ted Stevens (R, convicted felon) was miraculously leading Mark Begich (D, popular Anchorage mayor) by 3300 votes (out of 209,000) with 99% reporting. If Stevens is elected to the Senate, he will probably be expelled in January leading to an election, most likely between Begich and Sarah Palin. Given the heavy Republican dominance of Alaska, Palin would probably win that one. With four years in the Senate, she would make a much more plausible candidate in 2012. If, on the other hand, Begich wins, then Palin goes back to Alaska to shoot moose.

Perhaps they saw her on television and now know what an unmitigated dumb ass she is.
Yeah right...she could well become senator Palin.[:'(]

Why wouldn't she just continue to be Governor Palin?

Since you most likely have to vote for their respective parties. How about you just do not vote when Ted Stevens get kicked out. By you, i mean the Republicans.

*sigh* i hate politics! lol.

Two reasons:

1. A Senator in the US Congress arguably has more power than a Governor of a state with the population of Austin Texas.  She can't affect national policy as Governor of Alaska.

2. More important, it positions her (in her mind at least) as a viable candidate in 2012.  Two years as Governor plus 4 as Senator sounds better on paper than 6 years as Governor of above state.

I can't imagine how, but thanks for clarifying that.

Except that in this vote (there'd be a special election if Stevens is expelled), only Alaskan Republicans vote (and the few Alaska Democrats living there).

And Alaskans love their Stevens (half of them anyway), and they love their Palin (most of them anyway).

Easy--can you say "experience in Washington, working across the aisle"?

(yeah, it sticks in my craw when I associate it with "Senator Palin", but they'd use it just the same)

Add that to "executive experience", and it looks better than "executive experience" alone.

Musicmystery -> RE: Senator Palin in 2009? (11/5/2008 7:27:10 PM)

And yet, President-elect Obama is the first sitting Senator to be elected since JFK.

slavejale -> RE: Senator Palin in 2009? (11/5/2008 7:28:06 PM)

That is INDEED true. i think thats what i meant. lol.
thanks for the clarity though.

True indeed.  Which is why I was thankful for two things:

1. He was running against a sitting Senator instead of a Governor (eg Romney).  Governor-to-President makes a more powerful campaign argument than Senator-to-President. (thank you Republican primary voters!)

2. McCain had Palin as his running mate instead of Lieberman or Romney (thank you Scott Schmidt!)

Obama may well have still beaten Romney, but I doubt it would have been the same electoral trouncing (currently 349 to 163).

And now I am thankful for President-Elect Obama.

No way.   She is a dumb one.  She fell for the Canadian prank.

On NBC last night, I think I heard that 11 percent of women voted for Palin.   The majority said she just wasn't qualified to be President.
She could not even be gracious as McCain was in his speach.

Remember, only Alaskan votes count in this Senate race.  Many don't care how dumb she might appear.  They only care that she's a tough hockey-mom Republican who "stands up to oil companies" and/or was Miss Wasilla runner-up.

kdsub -> RE: Senator Palin in 2009? (11/5/2008 9:02:54 PM)

I thought the Republican line was Palin would make a better more experienced leader because she was Governor of the great state of Alaska...you know, see Russia from the mountain...As compared to Obama's measly experience as junior senator.

If that is the case and not Republican rhetoric why would she want to step down to a junior senator?
