One of the things that is often said to be good for the soul is to do something kind for someone else for no other reason than to make them happy. I was wondering when was the last time you did something like this?

Since I got back from Burning Man (end of August) I've been trying to do this as often as possible.  Thanks for the reminder, though, I haven't done anything like that in a couple days.  :)

I try to do this as often as I can. I think being kind to other people is very easy to do. Little things can mean so much.  And I have noticed that when you do something for others for a completely non-selfish reason, it seems to end up coming back to you sooner or later. Life is funny that way.

About two weeks ago I went to the mall.
No particular reason, I just wanted to get out.

A friend and I stopped into one of our regular haunts, and the sales clerk was looking a little more than tired. Now, that in of itself was too bad, but, I had been there a few times before and he was always this big ball of happy energy.
I found it a little depressing and tried to cheer him up.

So, on my way out, I casually asked if I could get him something from the food court.
"No..." he said.
I asked him again.
"No... I'm fine..." he said.
I smiled real bright and asked again, "You sure?"
He finally smiled and responded, "Surprise me."

I hounded an actual answer out of him and left.

The look on his face when I actually came back with a drink for him was priceless. He was giggly and bubbly, jumping around and he gave me this biggum hug.

It made my whole day just to get him to smile. [:)]

I'm a firm believer in "what you give you get".  If I give nastiness/anger/arrogance then it will come back. It dosn't have to be things you do...it can just be you attitude that makes someone's day, even a stranger's. Case in point....

I was on the phone the other night with India...DSL connection problem (out-sourcing is our friend?). I was preparred for a negative experience, given what others had said, and was really tired and still had work to do.  As I talked with "John", I realized he was having just as shitty a day as I was and my being rude wouldn't help matters for either of us.
I joked with him and was patient and we talked about what part of India he was in....just nonsense stuff....and put myself in his shoes for that moment. I ended up on the phone for almost an hour as he walked me through the repair. At the end of it all, he said "Miss (ohhh I did love that), thank you for not losing patience with me. So many people are rude but it was a pleasure to talk and work with you. You made me smile and I have 8 hours more to go. When I get down, I will think of some of these jokes you told me and be able to smile."
Now he may have been pulling my leg with that, But I can only hope that I made his day a bit brighter just by being silly.

Maybe I'm a bit selfish in that I want to see/hear their smile....but I see that as good selfishness.

I have always done Random acts of kindness, my entire life  once I was old enough to. I have always been a kind and giving , thoughtful person  I do Something randomly kind all the time in real life and in online life. Last couple times was a few weeks ago when we had to have my dog put to sleep I gave the vet staff a home made card thanking them for theirkindness, then I gave my dad some precious pictures of Sparky, since he felt the loss VERY badly.   I also put an entire 24 pack od soda's in the fridge for daddy so he'd have cold soda's when he got home, and it's not expected of me to do so nor even asked, I just did.

But I really think it's tacky to go around stating when the last time you did a RAOK was and what it was. It kind of feels like tooting your own horn and seeking validation for doing the RAOK.
