Well, the Pubs during the Bush administration strove for a permanent Republican majority in Congress, even breaking laws to do it in some cases. Look how well that worked. Even Republicans are talking about their root troubles going back to Gingrich, who sacrificed anything and everything to "beat Democrats" as the sole goal. And the Democrats know that 2010 is coming quickly. Pelosi has already stressed the importance of governing from the middle. We at least have a better chance than anytime recently to build a system where people start to work together. We'll see.

He/she still has to be backed by at least 40 Senators out of 100, otherwise 60+ can vote for cloture, which ends the filibuster for that individual Senator. By the way, only Senators can filibuster; it doesn't apply in the House.

The governors of those states will appoint a temporary replacement to finish their terms. In both cases, those governors are Democrats.

That's what I thoght about Biden's seat, but I wasn't sure about Illionois. Update on the Minnesota Senate race/recount: Coleman's lead is now down to 236 votes, and the official recount hasn't even started yet. The fat lady hasn't even taken the stage yet.

In Illinois, pressure will be on choosing a black candidate, as Obama was the only black member of the Senate. Jesse Jackson Jr. is interested. No word yet from the governor. In Delaware, Biden's son has long been seen as one day taking up the seat, but he's currently overseas in the military.

There's more to it than that. If he's willing to speak at the Republican National Convention and trash his own party's candidate for President, that means he must think Iraq and other foreign-policy questions are more important than the economy, health care, and other domestic issues where McCain's positions are quite different from his own. And...they're not more important. The three most important issues right now are energy, the environment, and the economy. He and Reid had a chat Thursday, about which Lieberman said they both needed to think about a few things before proceeding. Whatever that means. Doesn't sound rosy, but not a shut-out either.
