I think the Dems would probably find a place for Lucifer in their caucus if if gave them absolute control.

Barney Frank co-responsible for the fannie mae mess and prostitute ring runner is *already* in the caucus. Although, i don't honestly remember if he's a senator or representative.

The rules need to actually be enforced.

Yes indeed.

We don't need more rules, just use the ones we already have. It could also be said that if that were to happen across the board most of us would be incarcerated.

Well, the Pubs during the Bush administration strove for a permanent Republican majority in Congress, even breaking laws to do it in some cases. Look how well that worked. Even Republicans are talking about their root troubles going back to Gingrich, who sacrificed anything and everything to "beat Democrats" as the sole goal.

And the Democrats know that 2010 is coming quickly. Pelosi has already stressed the importance of governing from the middle. We at least have a better chance than anytime recently to build a system where people start to work together. We'll see.

You know, I wish to hell that these congressmen and senators would just poll their constituents and then vote according to the wishes of "The People."
I hope they remember them,..."The People."

Irishknight -> RE: Senate: No 'magic' 60 possible (11/6/2008 4:50:56 PM)

Why start remembering us now, Popeye?

Filibuster should go back to the old keep talking style.  This "I invoke filibuster" and then sit down shit is ridiculous.  If they don't have the balls to actually do it, then it shouldn't be an option.  All it is currently is obstructionism when someone doesn't get his/her way.

Actually, it comes down to giving an individual Congressman veto power, which is supposed to be reserved for the POTUS. [>:]

Congress definitely needs a return to the old days- duels, fistfights, etc., maybe update it a *little* with a Steel Cage Death Match live on Pay-Per-View!- a little *commitment* to governance.

I'm all in favor of partisan divides between  the branches of government- as a rule, the less they get done, the better off *we* are. Twain is just as right today as he was a hundred and fifty years ago.

Well, sorta.  He/she still has to be backed by at least 40 Senators out of 100, otherwise 60+ can vote for cloture, which ends the filibuster for that individual Senator.

By the way, only Senators can filibuster; it doesn't apply in the House.

But governing is making choices and compromises, and hopefully we will now start to return to the days just a few decades ago when Senators of opposing parties got together and worked out differences.

Precisely why I am comfortable with the Dems having a 55- or 56-seat majority next year. A strong majority, but not so strong they can get away with shutting the republicans out of the process.

Actually it's still an option.  They had 51 before (counting Lieberman and Sanders), and added 5 Tuesday night, bringing them to 56.  NBC and AP have today called Oregon for Merkley (D)--57.  Still open are:
- Jim Martin (GA--runoff on Dec 2, plus absentee ballots yet to be counted)
- Al Franken (MN--recount to be completed sometime in December)
- Begich (Alaska, 70,000 absentee ballots yet to be counted)

Did you read some news that I didn't?

The Minnesota contest is taking a very interesting turn. The initial 750 vote lead for Coleman is now already down to about 330 votes. And from what I heard on MPR on the way to work this morning, there are about 50,000 ballots that were not counted because the optical scan machines could not read them. Those 50,000 ballots will have to be counted by hand to determine the voter intent on each one, and it's very possible Franken will wind up picking up an additional 330 votes out of those 50,000. This thing really isn't over after all.

bluepanda -> RE: Senate: No 'magic' 60 possible (11/6/2008 7:46:17 PM)

One question that I haven't seen addressed, though - who replaces Obama and Biden in the Senate? Anyone know what the process is in their home states?

Musicmystery -> RE: Senate: No 'magic' 60 possible (11/6/2008 7:48:24 PM)

The governors of those states will appoint a temporary replacement to finish their terms.

In both cases, those governors are Democrats.

Thanks. That's what I thoght about Biden's seat, but I wasn't sure about Illionois.

Update on the Minnesota Senate race/recount: Coleman's lead is now down to 236 votes, and the official recount hasn't even started yet. The fat lady hasn't even taken the stage yet.

Musicmystery -> RE: Senate: No 'magic' 60 possible (11/6/2008 8:36:59 PM)

In Illinois, pressure will be on choosing a black candidate, as Obama was the only black member of the Senate. Jesse Jackson Jr. is interested.

No word yet from the governor.

In Delaware, Biden's son has long been seen as one day taking up the seat, but he's currently overseas in the military.

Out of all the contested Senate seats, the one I want most is MN.  I want Bill O'Lielly to choke on his falafel.  I want the viewership of C-SPAN to go up because people tune in to see Senator Franken (heck, they might learn something about their government).  I want Jon Stewart to have Senator Franken as a guest.  And I've recntly learned what a scumbag Norm Coleman is, and I want him kicked to the curb.

Go Al Franken!

Lordandmaster -> RE: Senate: No 'magic' 60 possible (11/6/2008 9:58:59 PM)

There's more to it than that.  If he's willing to speak at the Republican National Convention and trash his own party's candidate for President, that means he must think Iraq and other foreign-policy questions are more important than the economy, health care, and other domestic issues where McCain's positions are quite different from his own.

And...they're not more important.  The three most important issues right now are energy, the environment, and the economy.  And you're not going to be able to solve any of those problems without addressing the other two.

I think Lieberman knows which side is really in charge now.  And actually his Senate voting record has been more liberal than Obama's--he just has a bug about the Iraq war.

Musicmystery -> RE: Senate: No 'magic' 60 possible (11/6/2008 10:03:43 PM)

He and Reid had a chat Thursday, about which Lieberman said they both needed to think about a few things before proceeding.

Whatever that means. Doesn't sound rosy, but not a shut-out either.
