I watch the news on LOGO when I want to learn about alternative sexuality in the news. If it isn't considered a scandal by the major media outlets, it maybe on there.

This ignoring the ballot measures there is a sign of why such discrimination prevails -- the media thinks no one cares or may be vested in making sure no one knows about it for some reason.

California Taxation of Domestic Partners - General Principles.

In general, California now affords the same rights and responsibilities to RDPs (Registered Domestic Partners) that previously were available only to married individuals. For California tax purposes, the same rules applicable to married individuals (relating to filing status, community property income, etc.) now apply to RDPs. However, because the federal government does not recognize domestic partners as married individuals for federal tax (IRS) purposes, RDPs will continue to file as unmarried individuals on their federal returns.

I heard he was against gay marriage, but ok with civil unions. Maybe I was wrong and he will try and change things, but I am not going to run out and buy a wedding gown yet.

That I find tough to believe since CBC's "The National" had a news segment last night regarding Proposition 8 now that Obama's the newest US President. Apparently several same sex couples were denied marriage licenses and the consensus is if the same sex marriages laws are repealed, then all the same sex weddings will be considered null and void. If I heard correctly, there is a couple in California that have filed several lawsuits over the threat to their legal rights as a married couple. As pointed out by another poster, maybe it is time for the LGBT community to become more militant and do what is necessary to gain complete equality.

Thanks Merc for the IRS info.  I was trying to herd cats this morning and didn't have the time ("herd cats" = "get kids ready for school").

Prop 8 had nothing to do with existing same sex marriages, and was not a law repeal.  What I've been reading is that law changes or state constitutional amendments do not have an automatic retroactive component to them; unless it is stated specifically in the law change or amendment, whatever has happened so far stands.  The opinion was that marriages already in place will continue to be valid.

I guess we WON'T have our day. He does not support same sex-marriage and never has.
But he does not believe that there should be a constitutional ban on it and states should be allowed to decide for themselves.

There was a lot about it here on the news in NJ & NY. We both have civil unions.

Mad, California already had what you're talking about, and still will have it.  Couples can register with the state as "domestic partners" and receive the same benefits, as I understand it.  That part will not change with this amendment.

What I cannot remember is if the feds treat you as your state treats you... whether you can claim "married" on your tax return if you are registered domestic partners.  I think you can, but I'm not sure (and don't have the time right now to look it up).

Hi Cali...I also saw what Merc posted but was wondering if same sex partners  specifically would be considered domestic partners under California law?

Butch:  The "domestic partner" law was specifically set up for same sex partners AND for people over 62 of the opposite sex.  Here is the section of the law that describes registered domestic partners:  http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=fam&group=00001-01000&file=297-297.5

Here is information on registering as domestic partners: http://www.sos.ca.gov/dpregistry/ .  The "union" can be dissolved; the process is similar to a regular divorce.
