Hi All

This thread is for all of us to unload our hatred, disgust, etc of our bosses thereby avoiding killing them and ending up in prison for a very long time.

I'll start.

I work processing and typing letters and documents for a department of my local hospital. There has been a huge backlog because my manager hasn't replaced me for the last year or so. While i was away on a sick leave last July, during which someone finally replaced me, he changed the way of processing the documents supposedly to take care of the backlog but really to make it look like he was actually doing something. When i got back i told him it wouldn't work because the only way to get rid of a backlog is to start with the oldest doc and work my way up to the newest....he didn't listen.

Now, 4 months later, the backlog is still there and he's putting pressure on me to eliminate it. On Wednesday he told me to revert to the old way of doing it, yesterday he told me to alternate between the old way and the new. This way, it appears that i'm caught up, which gets the doctors off his back. HOWEVER it's a completely different setup which makes more work for me. Oh...and he asked me how long it'll take me to catch up. There are almost 900 documents (i know that because he made me count them instead of actually processing them) how the fuck should i know!?

Okay people, i turn this thread over to you. C'mon let all the stress of dealing with your unreasonable boss out.

Note: if you write about how fantastic your boss is, i will have to hunt you down and kill you *beams*

At the risk of garnering the ire of phoenix...tis not my boss that is the problem...my entire job is.
i literally have no schedule. If i want to do something on Wednesday, i can take that day off with no negative impact on my performance eval...i can take as much time off as i need any time that i need...conversely, if i take Wednesday off, there is a distinct possibitility that i wont work any other day of the week.
i basically live my life oncall...and that sucks. i can also be cancelled or have my assignment changed to a different location, shift time....basically anything that can be changed....can be changed.
Once i succeed in working..i have literally no control over where i work, what my duties will be (within the perameters of my license), the people that i work with...nuthin. So on any given day i could be dealing with any number of issues all at once, or no issues whatsoever...again, no control and no way to prepare.

Now, inherently, i dont mind the lack of control...i can roll with the punches...but for another in my life, for whom control is vital....this could be an issue....and is consistently.

The stinger is, ive been doing this for 6 yrs...and ive tried to get a straight job...and within 2 weeks, i have managed to bore myself into oblivion....i need the uncertainty...i crave the unsettledness of it.

The boss of my company is an absolute bitch! She goes gallivanting off round Europe, leaving us to do all the work, and only brings back a hundred pounds' worth of presents for us when she finally decides to come back!

And pay rises? Crikey she's tight! I mean we had to have rises that were only double the inflation rate this year because of her!

And she expects us to come to work in whatever we feel comfortable in - what a way to treat your staff. And she lets us come in early and go early too if we need to, without problems - what a bitch!

During the past months - I have not worked for five years now - I have realized that a boss must be respected, even if you do not work for him any more, even if he or she is a stupid ass-hole. He has hired you. He can fire you. He pays you the money that you require to feed yourself. One may like the boss, but one can never be the friend of a boss, only his loyal employee.

A boss is in that position because he has qualified himself for that position.

Negative attitudes towards one's boss will result in negative counterforces. It is much better to be positive. If one has a problem with boss-instructions, then respectfully write him a short letter about the matter.

As for counting documents, it is often more efficient do guesstimate the number. Take ten, weigh them, weigh the lot, divide and say: there are approximately X documents.

As for your backlog: submit to your boss that it is advisable to hire two more personnel. If the office is used only eight hours a day, then there are sixteen more hours in the day that may be used to work through the backlog. 16 / 8 = 2 more personnel.

Hi Rule,

First of all, i work for the Gov't so no he doesn't pay me. Secondly, they are cutting back on staff so no they won't hire people to help me. Lastly he isn't qualified for the job, in fact he hasn't the first clue on how to do my job so his "suggestions" infallabley make things worse.

The fact is that had he arranged for someone to replace me there would be no backlog. Yet i'm the one with the pressure to end it.

How am i supposed to weight documents which are in a computer? The only way to know how many are outstanding was to count them.

I did write him about this, no answer which is typical. He didn`t listen back in July when i told him his new way of doing my job wouldn`t work, now the backlog is double what it was back then and the pressure is on me to eliminate it.

In windows. Go to explorer. Click on files, properties. You get a statistic which includes the number of files / documents.

i'm here representing my pet.

i not only hate his boss but i also dispise the cold, heartless man who fires his employees without cause or justification in a blink of an eye. for example, he fired a project manager for showing up to a dinner meeting 5 minutes late ...another was fired because of a family emergencey! i shite you not!

this Brit (and i love of all my Brit friends), co-owner of BP Amoco, constantly threatens his project managers that they're all on the bubble for a mass firing at any moment. my poor pet (who barely gets time off for vacation and/or visits) travels on a moment's notice from Denver (where he currently resides in a hotel) to Houston or Dallas to San Diego to Seattle or wherever else his boss tells him to go and back ...sometimes in a single day. i'm lucky if i get a phone call in which he's not dead tired from logging more air miles.

though i do hate the man, i'm looking forward to meeting the Brit soon. so i should stop complaining about my pet's job since does pay the bills ...and the future Vegas wedding.

Phoenix, you need to cover your ass. Send him emails summarizing his order of the day, and cc them to his boss. Do the same with a report on the backlog, on why it cannot be fixed, and listing all the times you told him what was required to be done. Right now he's setting you up to take the fall when this is discovered. You need to be able to show that you reported this problem on numerous occasions and he failed to solve it.

Sometimes, I can't stand my boss.... He wakes me up in the middle of the night to do everything he feels nessesary... He whines at me constantly... He makes me make him meals every day.... I never get a day off.... he yells if I wear something he doesn't like.... He cries at the drop of a hat.... He is selfish, and will take anything of mine that he wants.. it doesn't matter....

However, when he smiles at me and says "I love you Mommy! You're my best friend in the whole world!" That makes it all worth while!!!!

I agree misst, I can't bitch about the boss as I am my own boss. Though every time I tell myself to work harder or be super productive, I tend to tell myself to feck off . Can't win no how!

I feel for you...been there and done that.

You can always tell him you have 900 docs and the average processing time is 40 minutes and figure out that way how long it will take to get caught up. He is wanting to look good and why he is pressuring you. I also work for a local govt and one suggestion if doable is to ask if you can put in OT and earn it as CTO time instead of paid overtime. Yes with the economy the way it is no hiring but you could suggest a temp for say six weeks if you could provide stats that said in that amount of time you could get the backlog done. The thing is..to come up with a game plan and get his buy in. The only way to do that is figure out averages...knowing that one document may take longer and others may be shorter to complete.

Yea, well, I'm self employed too & I'm not the boss. My customers are the boss. Sure, I come and go as I please, but without them I would not be in business.
