is like, ...uh, South Africa separate country than Africa or is South Africa like...uh.. some southern region of the country of Africa?  I mean like uh...you have Mexico which is like a country and then you have some southern region of Mexico like southern Mexico but it is still same country! But then you have like ...uh... North and South Korea but those are like two totally different countries!! See what I mean? If somebody knows? It's been bugging me.

South Africa is to Africa as the United States is to North America. The one is a subset of the other, being a nation in a particular continent. Other North American nations include Canada and Mexico and France (two small colonies off Canada).

Other African nations include; and please note their is no attempt to list all or in any particular order: Morocco, Egypt, Sudan Congo, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Botswana, Zambia, Liberia and many others.

Asian nations part of the continent of Asia include; China, India, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Japan etc.

Central American nations include; Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, etc.

So why did you cut all your global history classes Joe?

Yes, and it gets even more confusing. How about New Mexico ? I bet there are parts of New Mexico that are older than, ummm, Old mexico ...and than there are New England and New Zealand, where the fuck is Old Zealand ? ,,,and how about New South Wales ??? It's all so confusing, I think I'll just go shopping. See ya in 2012.

*snicker*

btw- I asked my 14 yr old wise-ass yesterday if he could tell me what countries were in NAFTA. He first told me what NAFTA stands for and then named the countries. I asked how he knew that and he said 7th grade Civics.

Hey, my 14 yr old wise-ass is over qualified to run for VP of the USA!!!

(Thank G-d Obama won!)

Hooray for Palm Beach County school system. I asked my 16 year-old niece also in PBC, she said, and I quote, "Which countries are in NAFTA? As in the North American Free Trade Agreement? Please tell me auntie ____ that you know what THREE countries are in North America."

She emphaszied 'three' as though she were trying to give me a hint. After I explained to her that I knew, and Palin didn't, I realized my family is FULL of smart-ass, sarcastic little mofos.

As a teacher in said system, I thank you.

We have many issues, and personally, I think many miles to go before reaching the level of most of the school systems in NY/NJ (where I'm from), but we care about our kids and do our best. And requiring Civics for all 7th graders has proven a great idea!
