I identify myself as an American. With Irish and some German roots. I am also an Arkansan and an Idahoan. and I could care less if obama was an eskimo with some indian sikh thrown into the mix. he's human.

Same here.  I'm Hungarian, German and 1/8th Manx.  What does that make me? American.

IF you know specifically what COUNTRY you come from in Africa that is one thing.
I have a feeling that many of my ancestors might have come from Sierra Leone.
As Sarah Palin recently found out, Africa is a CONTINENT.
There is a difference between continents and countries.

During slavery, most African families were separated and many of us do not KNOW what country
our ancestors came from.
Along with the fact, that most of us have been mixed with other races.
People ask me if my maternal grandmother was White!

Unless you know what specific COUNTRY you are from, MANY Black Americans
prefer the term "Black" over African American.

Irish denotes a COUNTRY,  English denotes a COUNTRY, last I checked Hungarian denotes a Country.
Countries are not Continents.

European American is the equivalent of African American, if you don't call yourself a European American why call someone else an African American?

Mz Mia, Sierra Leone!
That's where the scammers are!
I've had three marriage proposals from women in Sierra Leone in the last week alone!
"Mr Popeye, you are so handsome!"
"Mr Popeye, you are so funny!"
"Mr Popeye, can you lend me $1,000?"

I've always wished it were that simple...  Alas, it is not, and history has been made.   Maybe we can move forward more honestly and with minimal prejudice.  M

First of all... I am DELGHTED in our selection of Obama.

What bothers me most is (if anything) is the identifing cry of “first black/ African-American” President.

The reality is .. he is our first “Bi-Racial President”.

He is the personification of what America strives to be. He is a blend of two races and two cultures. Fathered by a black man..birthed by a white woman and raised by another one (“typical” as they may have been. Actually, they must have been “extrodinary”)  He’s experienced two opposites of religions.  He’s lived in both realities.  He IS unity.

To me, he reflects balance. He’s taken the best from both worlds and made it work.

He is simply… himself.

I'll start by saying balance is everything: generally speaking, there are two sides to every story.

I'm not convinced you're getting balance, though, as the promise of change and a new beginning is fundamentally over-stretching his capabilities as politician; and as a reasonable human being, he must know this.

perhaps Obama just looks in the mirror and realizes as do others....His complection is darker than "white people"and his Father was Kenyan so he is truly African-American? 40 years ago depending on where he lived he wouldn't have been able to vote in America so it is signifigant....I don't think I will refer to him as African American in the future...Just call him The President....but, I do refer to myself as an old white guy often....

Mark?
But such a handsome old white guy!
I am just a middle aged "cute" Black woman.

p.s.- Since Obama is "bi-racial" let's call him an African/European American!
If NOT you are denying Obama's mother proper identification, see how stupid it all is.

All the Black people I know are calling him America's first Black President.
If you want to call him African/European American, do it.
