As many know I have been assembling a collection of music for the last few years. I know people who have alot more song/gigs whatever than I but I go for the hard to find stuff.

My recent acquisition of a song called "Der Kommissar" has caused an argument over here, as to who did it. It was listed as being done by a group called After The Fire. Mediaplayer shows the embedded information to match. It also lists the album as being "Poptronica Scifi" and when I looked that up on the web it says Artist - Varied. Seems to me that means it was one of those collections like they used to sell on TV. All your favorites on one album type of thing.

I have two friends insisting Der Kommissar was done by Duran Duran, one says he is 100% sure. So I played Der Kommissar and the Hungry Like A Wolf consecutively and there is an uncanny resemblence in style and vocals.

I have downloaded alot of pieces that were mislabeled, and even the embedded information can be incorrect. I did find it by the band name "After The Fire" but the web can be wrong. It said the group  name was acronymized to "ATF" which does not ring a bell. I found no members common in Duran Duran.

The thing that bothers me is that this song got alot of radio play, and to have never have heard of the group's name seems unlikely. Perhaps someone has the original recording ?

Is it possible that the group actually was ATF but being a one hit wonder never put out an album, and the only way to get it was in one of those collections ?

I would just like to know for sure.

Ummmm, I hate to show my age but the original Der Kommisar was done in German by Falco.  Anything else is a cover.

(egads, now I'm going to have that song going through my brain....)

Try gracenote.com to settle these bets - just about everything there is to know about music!

I won't gaurantee it but I'm pretty sure Duran Duran (named after the angel in "Babarella") never covered "Der Kommissar".

ATF's album "Der Kommissar" was release in 1995, quite a few years after Falco

Term: Drop me a line sometime - I'm close to filling a 500gb drive with music.  I might have some stuff you would like.  Gonna have to get a 1tb drive soon...

Lumus: it could be worse: the OP could have asked about "Rock Me Amadeus"  :D

Duran Duran never covered Der Kommisar. This was a trivia question on my exhusbands DJ show a couple of years back. After The Fire, a british group I believe, did it. They have an uncanny resembalance soundwise to duran duran and are often mistaken for them.

My 2 possibly unhelpful cents

Ah geez, now I'm gonna have that video pinging through my head all day.... And this is Rain, Dave, Lumus gets the joy of working today. I was a club brat in the eighties and still listen to some 80's (ok, a lot!) music to Lumus' dismay. I think that's why he bought me the MP3 player!

Actually, sweetnurseBBW, what's pathetic is that I didn't need to look it up - I knew it from memory. I remembered Falco because I saw an interview he did on an Australian music show called Sounds in the early 80's when I lived there. *sigh*

Pleased to meet you.  Nothing wrong with 80's music, for the most part.  But, as with any other decade, there's a LOT of crap.  And with any such statement, it's completely subjective.

So now you're stuck with Amadeus in your head?  My work here is done :D

The Angel in Barbarella is Pygar
Durand Durand (misspelled by the band) is the tyrant as played by Milo O'Shea.

Intersting development this morn. Not that my question is answered except that it was done by ATF. As I stated I find it hard to believe that with as popular as that song got I never heard of ATF, but it is the only answer right now and it seems my friends are wrong.

However I have now downloaded the German version and it is definitely the same song, but in German. Surprisingly it is not as techno as the English version. The Falco version does employ electronic echo and short sustain to the "guitar" part, the English version mixed the percussion quite differently with different components completely panned to one side or the other.

Perhaps sometimes Gnutella knows more than Google ? In the search for Falco it found Rock Me Amadeus, which I also remember, but I seem to remember it in English, this is in German. So I changed the search terms and found the same song, supposedly that is because you never know, by a group called Blood Hound Gang. This particular piece is coming very slowly, the others I got in less time than it takes to listen to them. It says it will be here in 44 minutes. It indicates that I am recieving it from only one sender. Some of my best stuff came that way and I have time.

I appreciate all the answers, and I'll get back to you on that Dave, I have had to buy a few things here and there, but I'll go into that later. But it seems to me that something is not right. Someone said that version of Der Kommissar came outin 1995. I seem to remember it, yes in English, quite some time before that.

I remember 1995 quite vividly because that is the year my house burned down. I am quite sure in my mind that Der Kommissar preceded that event by quite some time. Unless my brain is completely scrambled. Or is it possible that ATF covered it and did not have an album, or at least not right away ?

Dave, I do appreciate the offer and might take you up on it, if a way to get anything to me can be found. I can cmail you and give you my email, but for discussion purposes here is just fine, as that is what this place is for. But I think I should explain myself a bit on the nature of my collection. I am not after that much music, what it is, is I am remembering songs from the past because I do not constantly bombard myself with the current noise.

As such I have had trouble getting things, most of the time I can't remember who did it, take for example the song Signs by Five Man Electrical Band. Now if you go looking for "signs" it is obvious the results will be overwhelming. It actually took running into someone who remembered who did it for me to get it. There are other examples that are quite similar.

There are other scenarios as well, like when not alotof people on P2P have it and it comes slowly and I just can't keep this thing on it for long. I really need to clean out my shared directory and as much as I chomp at the bit for a fight with the RIAA, I am leery about biting off more than I can chew. The way I try to cooperate on P2P is not to share files I got in three seconds from eighty people, I try to share things that were very hard to get, which came slowly from who knows where.

In this way I add diversity, and there is no need for me to add to eighty people for a download. But if someone can get some of this obscure material from two or three people instead of just one, I believe that is contributing. If nobody contributes the system does not work.

I don't know where you got your stuff at Dave, but with that much I think you probably ripped alot of it yourself.  I got a buddy who does that, in fact more than that, someone will call him to get say an import CD that you can't get, and this guy knows how to find them. At a discounted price he burns them an audio CD, copies all the artwork on the insert as well as the CD itself and they get what they want while he builds an incredible collection. Yes this is not quite legal. I think some could hem and haw their way out of it, but I wouldn't do as much of it as he does. One thing going for him is that he is usually doing this with imports. HAHA, I could see them hauling his ass off to Germany, they did it to Ernst Zundel.

Really I am not sure how international copyright (the PROPER SPELLING BTW) laws work in such a case. It may boil down to if a US copyright was ever obtained for the work. But he has an ulterior motive.

See he is one of the most ultimate DJs you will ever see. On top of an absolutely fantastic collection and sound system he has fog, lasers, all that. He charges quite a bit, but does parties for large companies and such. He no longer carries his CD collection to the gigs. It is on two computers, identical computers loaded identically. They each have three HDs, one os for the OS and programs, one is like A-L and the other M-Z. He has it all categorized electronically, searches are possible. He has this policy that if you are at one of his gigs and you make a request he doesn't have, he will get it. I can also just call him up but he is a busy Man and hard to get ahold of. Sometimes I wonder why he bothered to buy a house.

At any rate, the net result is thus. I talked about this with my boss because he knows a DJ as well, so it came up. He said this guy could get in trouble with the copyright people, but what he doesn't realize is that this guy has the original prerecorded media corresponding to just about everything on those computers. IIRC he has the right to a backup copy and I'm sure that his situation would afford him a very good defense. Why would he want to carry all those CDs around, as well as some big speakers, and all this other stuff ? It was getting to the point where it would not all fit in his truck.

So the thing is, I don't need a modern record store, err well CD store. They don't have what I want. The only two songs I took any fancy to lately were Nickelback - Rockstar and Blake Shelton - Old Red. To be fair, maybe I should buy those.

Even though my musical taste is varied, I am not generally into what comes off the shelf.

It took a month to get Glass Bottle - Ain't Got Time Anymore off P2P. I couldn't get anything from the album Stagepass by MSB. I could get a Starz tune here and there but could never get I Pulled The Plug. I had to buy these. My guru the DJ sold them to me, but he screwed on up. I wanted Alex Harvey - Midnight Moses off the Live album, not the studio version. Got that by any chance ?

But he got me The Four Foursemen - Rockin' Is My Business. I let this thing search for days and got nothing.

Back to Falco, this other version is in by Blood Hound Gang. It is the English version. That splains that. Again it is a bit more techno, but it sounds fine. (nice thing about this P2P program, it always overestimates DL time, if it says an hour you usually have it in fifteen minutes)

I can't proof this whole big thing right now, and I ain't makin it any bigger.

Oh, Eighties music!

LOVE!

If you heard an English version of the song, it's most likely ATF.  I'm sure there are other English covers of Der Kommissar out there, maybe by small synthy bands, maybe live sets (I've had friends cover the ATF version when playing shows), but the song that gets radio play is most certainly ATF.

I much prefer Falco's version.  I love that song, but ATF's version stretches on FOREVER.  And, I'm a fan of Deutsch.

The version that was well overplayed on US radio stations and on the top 40 charts was the version done by After The Fire.
