if we do not become "one nation" under God or some higher being it depends on your religion we can be conquered.

...so you oppose any separation of church and state? i'd argue that a nation, any nation, can come together in a national emergency in the name of that nation. God is not required.

just like AA!  i did not say my God is required!

A mutt is a dog of mixed breed. My um's are biracial and I would not categorize them to any degree as being a mixed breed dog. They are human beings as with anyone else in our society.

So I find it asinine for mixed race individuals to refer to themselves as mutts, just like the old labels of mulatto, quadroon and ect. It's ridiculous and it's dehumanizing.

This is fueled by the unjustified paranoia created by the gun lobby.

Gee, anybody think they have an economic reason for creating such misplaced hysteria? That just maybe this is a few corporations fleecing the sheep via fear-mongering?

Naw---would American corporations do that???????

if that is what is happening, and i do not doubt it could be, i again say WTF!

what Obama's victory means to me? besides it being a defining moment in Black history, it (hopefully) will give us as a race to put petty differences aside and work together as one. i've never expected something like this ever happening within my parents' lifetime ...let alone my own. for my girls, it shows that they can achieve anything.

however there's a negative side to this victory as well. a guy staying in line at the grocery store said he was happy Barack won because it meant more money for his public aid and food stamps. he was glad the white crackers (his exact words) were not in charge ...we (meaning Blacks) were running the country now. somehow and somewhere, this guy and many others like him missed the message within Obama's speech. it's this type of mentality which can blacken momentous event in history.

That man is a self hater and needs some sense slapped into his lazy ass.

i refer to myself as a human being, a citizen of my state and my country.  i borrowed "mutt" from PE Obama's speech.  i was not offended by it.

I'm pretty sure the oil companies would never do such a thing either...

...no, that's right you didn't. i should have amended my point to "A God is not required". What, arguably, is required is an idea. This can be non-theistic. It can be transitory. It can even be an emotion, but higher being? Nope, not necessary.

i think they are baiting us with these low prices.  i just expect to see $3.99 a gallon return any day.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Obama's Victory Means To Me (11/9/2008 10:44:52 AM)

Not to mention heating prices.

bestbabync -> RE: What Obama's Victory Means To Me (11/9/2008 10:46:04 AM)

whatever the motivation, Philo!

i want to see PE Obama unite this country.  that is all i am getting at.  i still see division since the election and it worries me.  other countries are watching us.  i want to see the US become strong and respected.  what is wrong with success and security?

i heat with natural gas.  wonder if all heating prices will go up?

I am a bit fearful. while everyone is elated that we have our first black/white president. i fear that this man still has another agenda. he cannot do all he says he will do. he has too much mess to clean up. plus i have seen his low self image of himself- by calling himself a mutt? that wasn't a joke to me. but it spoke volumes. someone who doesn't view themselves very well...will often become insecure and begin to use their power to eventually abuse. just like Bush. just like many ther presidents. just like dysfunctional people period.

i am a black woman. i voted independent.  and Obama's victory means- i am scared to death.

....fair enough........and in a spirit of friendliness i'd like to point out that language is as divisive as anything. When you type things like "God or a higher power" you polarise things. Best to leave religion out of it.

[sm=Groaner.gif]
Obama's win means an end to many of the present administrations faulty policies.  Hopefully, better legislation to protect the environment.  More of a focus on the declining state of the U.S. educational system.  Less threat of the government pushing  policies restricting women's rights.  And at least 4, but possibly 8 more years of people arguing about whether mixed-race people have the right to call ourselves "black".....

If you are implying that somehow Obama suffers from low-esteem, then I think this ridiculous conversation needs to come to a close.

esherazi

i am scared too!  i voted 3rd party as well.

you are right, PE Obama promised too much and i think about how much it will cost us if he follows through with it.  along with that sucking sound that we all hear, what are we in for?

PE Obama promised america change and hope.  i pray for him and this country every night!

awmslave -> RE: What Obama's Victory Means To Me (11/9/2008 11:03:12 AM)

"What we are witnessing is continuity.  Obama provides a " human face" to the status quo. This human face serves to mislead Americans on the nature of the economic and political process.  The neoliberal economic reforms remain intact.  The substance of these reforms including the "bailout" of America's  largest financial institutions ultimately destroys the real economy, while spearheading entire areas of manufacturing and the services economy into bankruptcy".
The above is an opinion of a political commentator Michel Chossudovsky. I wish Obama well. There is no reason so far to believe he will take any action against the interest of financial and political establishment.

That shows dedication I've never prayed for mine, I feel so guilty that the UK hasn’t been properly represented to god in my prayers. Maybe I could put in place some kind of automated prayer message to God to make up for it.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: What Obama's Victory Means To Me (11/9/2008 11:06:54 AM)

in my neighborhood, there are many self-haters who have this mentality.  this guy in particular was boosting how he and a few friends taunted the cops with "you can't touch us ...Obama has our back" - like that's going to to stop the police from arresting them.
