I was raised a Catholic with the Sisters of Notre Dame presiding which explains most of my psychological baggage.  However, the Catholic Church is not representative of Catholics on many issues.   Catholics will tell the church to take a hike on a surprising number of issues.  If you want to rein in the Catholic Church you have to rein in the priests.  Do not equate Catholic priests with the Catholic laymen.  Many priests who are in control are hypocrites.  I think you are right.  Threaten the tax status and the priests will cave in because money is involved.  I guess we are back to the adage that everything is about money.  The Catholic Church is money driven.  I have not heard many Catholic laymen bad mouthing same sex marriages etc.
