I think that people are asking michael, is that if say all the people who went to war, were postman(i am trying to relate it to your other thread) and they needed people to deliver mail to say old ladies across country, would you do so if you had the time/unemployed/work two jobs etc. the.dark.

Hmmmm thats nice the Jews in WW2 were very passive to as they headed meekly into the showers...ooppss gas chambers?! But hey at least they didnt fight in any wars. Sometimes a war is needed and why? To keep your ass and others alive from crazy tyrants that want to kill as many people as possible. So we can all just join hands and sing Kumbayaaa My Lord...until the evil ones kill us all..........or Fight BACK??

I have served my time in 2 branches of the military. If my phone rang saying that my experience and or knowledge was needed to help keep other soldiers alive, I would go. If a recruiter asked me to join for any other reason, the answer would be "No." If this country were invaded, I would be one of the first looking for a good solid resistance group or militia to work with. Michael, retreat is a viable option but one can only go so far. When you reach the edge of the cliff, you have to leap to your death like a lemming or fight for your life. When a man breaks into your home with a gun to kill your family, talking sweet to him is not an option. There is not always an alternative to fighting. I dislike war as much as anyone. If it comes to me, I will fight it. As long as our troops are in one, I will do what I can to help keep them alive and to support their families. If that makes me a warmonger, then so be it.

Before WWI, Jews were trying to get from the Russian region of Pale, which was really a vast Jewish ghetto to the socially liberal Deutsches Reich. The unnecessary WWI caused the collapse of a socially cohesive relatively progressive monarchy to the most democratic but most impoverished (in Europe) country whose conditions were rife for exploitation by extremists. WWII, was really just an extension of WWI. The lesson is not, if you are not prepared to fight you could end up being murdered, the lesson is that if you are prepared to fight for patriotic, imperialist and nationalistic reasons, you might create a monster that cannot be controled. And anyway, look at the shit way veterans are treated once they've returned home. That should be a lesson to anyone that being a soldier is a mugs game.

While I agree that War is not the best course of action, I can think of a few that are worse. Consider if the world did nothing to stop Hitler, or Tojo, or Attila, of Ghanghis Khan, or Kublia Khan? Or even Xerxes. War is the first act of a madman or woman and the last act of desperation of the oppressed. Throughout the course of history humans have fought against each other for various reasons, beginning with food, women, whatever. The race was doomed when Og and Gog were walking and Og picked up a chunk of wood, tied a rock to it and brained Gog cause he wanted Gog's woman or whatever. Since there has never been a period in history where every human on the planet agreed with every other human, the result has been violence, war, death and destruction. Until there is one unifying force among all humans, it will continue. War is humanity's answer to survival of the fittest. Basically if some troop doesn't learn in the first few weeks what it takes to survive in a combat zone, he is gonna get zapped. Of course, there are the blooded troops that get lax and complacent and then they get zapped. In the end, War is only stupid when you look at both sides, scratch your head and ask the simple question: "Now, wasn't there a better way to handle this situation?" and find six or seven yes answers. Oh, and the notion that violence never solved anything, why not ask the civic leaders of Carthage if violence solved anything.... oh, wait, you cant, the Romans solved the city of Carthage very well.

And consider the cause of WWI, please. The human race cannot even come to an agreement on how to stop the plague of twentieth century, referring to AIDS, help third world countries reduce their carbon out put, and even stop first world countries from continuing to destroy the ecosphere. Now, if you can find one idea that can gain the support of the majority of humans, you are still going to have a large number to stand against it, and be willing to fight to stop you. Wars have been fought for personal honor, (remember Troy) religion, (the Crusades) and race, ethnic differences, even tribal differences. Unfortunately, the only way to stop wars would be to eliminate the human race, at least at this point in our development.
