Status: offline 		Random fun time.  Rain and I were watching Canadian content today, things she never saw before, and once again I was struck by the massive gap that crops up between Canadians and Americans culturally [on occasion].

If you're American, what one thing about Canada surprised you the most?  Or have you most wanted to know?

Canadians, same question, directed towards the Americans.

Not Canadian or American?  What things have you noticed about either culture that surprised, impressed, affected you the most?

Status: offline 		Ok, I'll have a go since this was a shocker for me. A.A. Milne created "Winne the Pooh" for his son Christopher Robin after seeing an North American Black Bear called "Winnie" in an English zoo. Christopher Robin wanted to take Winnie home. Winnie arrived at the zoo during World War 1 after being the mascot of the Second Canadian Infantry Brigade. She was brought there by Lieutenant Harry Colebourn who named her after his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. When the brigade was assigned to France, he gave her to the London Zoo where she became a popular attraction until 1934. It was there, at the London Zoo, that A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin met Winnie the bear and our beloved Winnie the Pooh was created.

(I honestly had no idea there was a Canadian connection with Winnie the Pooh and this put me in shock!)

I noticed in the two cities I have been in how canadians (at least the ones I met) were uber friendly and not judgemental.  I would snatch a Canadian in a minute compared to American men or women. *grin*

I loved both visits to Canada, hopefully some day Angel (give her a large droopy puppy eye look will sent me tim tams and I can go to Canada and have both at the same time. I would happily die happy with that combo.

ok... how about, i warn anyone over here, if they suspect someone of being from north america, that they ask if the person is canadian. american's don't take offense about being considered canadian, but canadians apparently take GREAT offense if asked if they're american.

*something about the difference between being U.S. american and NORTH american i suspect. they think american's hog the name, perhaps?*

Surprise #2 - basketball was invented in Canada......

Surprise #3 (although I already knew this one) - The first trans-Atlantic cable for communications came to Canada (Nova Scotia) from Great Britain.

Have I ever told you that your pic reminds me of audrey hepburn every time I see it.  Your face just has that rare look of her. She is my hero.....I would be happy to do a hero exchange for tim tams. *winks*

My second husband, who can't possibly get a D stuck in front of him for internet abgrevations, had these observations while we were married:

That Canada is very prejudiced about accent, and, he felt, very rejecting of his speach as a child, immegrated from Europe, and his European French was very unacceptable.

That he felt Canadian women were very prudish and not open sexually. (but he was a special case. I doubt others feel that way - more likely, they just wouldn't do HIM, with, I have to say, good reason....)

He said he felt the American attitude towards freedom was much stronger than the Canadain attitude, which, in his opinion, could be traced back to the way the west was settled in each country. His description:

americans loaded up some wagons with their wives and children and a gun and an ax and went out and settled the frontier. Canadians sent the Mounties and said, 'send word when its safe'.

Not that I agree, but there are some freedom differences that shock me, like BDSM porn being illegeal.

As for a surprise, another one is that so many people just assume that American Constitutional rights are guaranteed here, forgetting that this is Canada, a different country. Ummmmm, there are no American Constitutional rights here in Canada, so you can't plead the 5th, folks......

It's great that the U.S. Constitution is so well known around the world but it only applies to the U.S.

I love everything about audrey, and the first time I saw your photo it screamed Audrey.  If she is on the telly Im watching it......drooling the whole time.  But its her face that so remarkable.

Well bearrlicious I would do just that but its past the days that ID or  birth certificate would get your though and I dont have the new fangled state id card that includes passage across borders nor a pass port.

But I do know there are a few Tim Hortons just across the border, at least through the border entry near Detroit. Stopped there when I went on a visit to London.

Meet me at the border? LOL

Status: offline 		  Ohhhh, Savage, there's some in Buffalo, right across from me....... And you can still cross with an ID and birth certificate until January. Trust me, we just had an international wedding where 50% of the guests came from the States and only 2 of them had passports.
