FatDomDaddy -> Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 4:48:54 PM)

Ok... so... get over the ruffled feathers and don't read the thread if you are easily offended.

From Today's Wikipedia Main Page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-tobacco_movement_in_Nazi_Germany

I was checking out wikipedia to see what was going on this day in history and the main page feature was the above link.

It was amazing to see the same tatics being used and dare say perfected today by the many in Anti Smoking crowd and how easily Americans turn a blind eye.

Politesub53 -> RE: Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 4:57:33 PM)

So people who are against smoking are the new nazis ?

Your claim of " It was amazing to see the same tatics being used and dare say perfected today by the Anti Smoking crowd and how easily Americans turn a blind eye. " sounds highly offensive to me. Posting "dont read the thread if you are easily offended " doesnt excuse your b/s either. You really should be ashamed.

First of all, FatDad, I find your comparison of anti-smoking rules and the nazis a tad distatestful. But let's try and fly over that...

I wish smokers were mindful of others more. Let's face it: the stuff stinks. I've given this example before, because it really fucks me off... My three stepchildren's mother and her boyfriend both smoke in their home. They both smoke in the car with the children as passengers. Two of those kids have asthma and allergies: yet, they stink to high heavens of cold cigarette smoke. Their clothes, their hair, their skin, all smell of smoke and stale ashtrays. In the winter, they can't even get out of their own house to escape the stench. It's disgusting. For them.

Now, I smoke myself (albeit, very, very rarely): but never indoors, never inside the car, and certainly never in the vicinity of anyone who cannot run away should they find the smoke unpleasant. I'm not an anti-smoking Nazi. Rather, I feel that a lot of smokers act like smoking Nazis, happy as they are to impose their smoke and filth upon others.

Rant over [>:] .

Sun kittin... I agree with much of what you say, manners wise but what bothers me is that the free market is not allowed (no pun) to weed out itself and that in places like bars (in many states) for example, where children have no business, one cannot smoke a cigarette, a legal and heavily taxed product

camille65 -> RE: Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 5:24:54 PM)

It is expensive but a great air filtration system (Las Vegas casinos come to mind) makes a smoking section hardly noticable. It also ticks me off that adults cannot smoke in adult venues even though such smoking is perfectly legal.

Tobacco as I said to kittin is a legal, heavily taxed and I will add readily available product in the United States of America. Many of the new laws enacted by local governments totalitarian and eerily similar to the ones posted in the linked article.

BTW... I did not write the article not did I make wiki use it as their main article today.

That they did makes it topical and reading it was chilling.

The point mde about bars is that the bartenders, wait staff, etc. can't escape the smoke.

God, I'm the first to whine when I'm not allowed to light up after a good meal - you know where I come from... although Europe is slowly becoming Americanised as far as smoking's concerned. Perhaps it's not a bad thing. An exception: a good American export [8D]!

Hitler was a Great Leader.

Most would be offended by that statement...but in fact, history shows without any influence...he was.

No one can control a country, let alone, influence one...without being exactly that...a great leader.

Was he maniacle?

Uh huh.

Was he inherently evil?

Uh huh.

He was still a great leader.  He led...exceptionally well (for a time).

The OP mentioned a Wikepedia source indicating that Germany was (one of) the first to attempt to control smoking.  Long before our Surgeon General suggested something a smidge more light hearted.

Why is the OP a horrifying poster...solely because he posted something akin to (anything from Wikepedia is always suspect) the truth?

Because it had the word "Nazi" in it.

Hitler was a great leader.

(And he was evil).

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 5:34:50 PM)

Who is forcing them to work in such places?

Again... market forces would  and have opened up scores of alternative watering holes and restaurants in which to seek work.

Early in this decade, Howard County, MD gave bars and resturants a year to put in such systems. Many business' spent 10's of 1000's of dollars to do this and then the next year, Howard County said... so what... smoking is banned anyway.

I can't tell whether you're serious, or whether you're joking there... to argue that someone was, or is, a 'great leader', you've got to give examples of the great and wonderful things they've achieved, preferably not at the expense of too many others. Good luck (I say this in the benevolent hope that your post was, indeed, tongue in cheek :-) .

As far as I know, you were never exported: so, no :-) .

Wiki is what it is and can be highly entertaining as well as informative.

The totalitarian ways the 1930's German Government used to stifle tobacco use and similar ways several American local and state governments are currently using are indeed chilling.

At least they are to me.

StrictnSaucy -> RE: Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 5:59:00 PM)

While this may be a little off topic, I am a smoker. Now, I have become acustomed to our no smoking laws. I dont mind them any more and totally abide by them (and actually see that they are a positive move). The thing that really gets my goat is when a non smoker visits my house or travels in my car, openly disapproves of me having a ciggie. That annoys me!

Racquelle -> RE: Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 6:01:10 PM)

Smoking is a health hazard.  In the United States, we do not force people to work in hazardous conditions that can otherwise be controlled.  We require safety gear, specialty breathing apparatus, harnesses, hearing protection...and we eradicate all manner of unsafe conditions, chemicals and materials to protect the health and well-being of workers.  In California, it has been illegal to smoke in any workplace, including restaurants and bars for many years.  You can find exceptions, such as private clubs, and a few establishments that skirt the law.  It is what is better for the overall good of Californians.  No one forces anyone to smoke.  Smoking is an addiction, and it's consequences on the smoker and those in close proximity are well documented.  Smoking isn't a right.  Keep it out of other people's airspace, including your childrens', and quit whining about your "right" to poison others and yourself.

I don't hassle friends who smoke, or bitch about them smoking in their own homes or cars.  If I choose to spend time with them, I make the choice to be around the smoke - and sometimes I choose not to be around it.

Lashra -> RE: Anti Smoking... Nazis? (11/12/2008 6:13:19 PM)

I do not smoke, never have and I never will. The stuff stinks and gives me migraine headaches. But if people want to do it in their own homes or auto's that is their business. I am glad that they cannot do it in restaurants but if they want to do it outside I do not care, I can walk quickly to get away from them.

O, don't get me started.  I watched as Florida intiated the unconstituional litigation against the Tobacco Companies.  Then once they had the award, fed like pigs at the trough.  Dumbasses.

The Tobacco Companies, Tobacco farmers, etc. are American workers. (Well, if you live and smoke in the U.S., anyway.)  Not every tobacco farm can be a sustainable revenue stream for a family if converted to other crops.  They may be the last family farms in the U.S.

I am soooo f**king sick to death of the 'officious intermeddlers' who want to run my damned life.  If you don't want to kiss me because I smoke, I'm cool with that.  It's not necessary to tell me I would 'taste like an ashtray'.

Whatever happened to manners?  To civility?  I have always been aware that some folks are allergic to cigarette smoke; I have always waited if, at the next table, an elderly person on oxygen is in the resturant.

I love smoking.  I'm not going to apolgise to anyone for it.  It's perfectly legal and folks need to mind their own damned business.

Yanno, I want to know where the f**k all these folks went to college?  What -- they never went out drinking?  O, give me a f**king break.  I was never in a bar in college that didn't have a smokey haze.  I still think smoking, like other customs, can be extremely sexy.

Smoking is a health hazard.

This is what bothers me the most.

If Tobacco is such a hazard, then why are we allowing it to be produced and then taxing it so high?

To drastic?

Then why do we allow it sold by the pack, the can, the pouch or singular cigars?

If it is so hazardous, why not tax it at $10 a pack or $20 or $50 a pack?  Why can we walk into any grocery, drug, liquor, 7-day, store or gas station and buy it?
