bar tenders always get a good tip ... usually several through the night .... waiters and waitress's  depending on the service but never below 10 %..... there has only  been one time that I did not leave a tip.  you really have to work hard to not get a tip from me  lol

I used to work as a waitress and so I always make sure to tip at least 15% unless the service was really bad. More if it was incredible, and less depending on just how bad it was.

since i know most of the bar and wait staff at the venues i frequent,  i usually tip 20 to 25%.  sometimes my drinks (soda actually), meals and/or entry fee are free because venues love getting free publicity from the many bands reviews.

I think that in the US where service is usually not included on the bill and wait staff is paid an hourly pittance, the term "gratuity" is a misnomer. A gratuity is a gift. In this case, it's not a gift at all, but payment for service.

I worked for years in the restaurant business at all levels and think that people often treat servers in a way that they would never treat anyone under other circumstances. Also keep in mind that servers are usually part of a team that includes kitchen staff, bartenders, bus persons and managers that sometimes give them more tables to serve than they are capable of doing. Nevertheless, servers are often blamed for things that are beyond their control. It's a tough job.

Having said that, I tip according to the service that I receive. For good, competent service, I tip 20%, more for excellent service, less for poor. However, I do pay attention to what's going on in the restaurant and take the other factors I mentioned into account. Attitude counts a lot with me.

Just for the record, I am TOTALLY against cow tipping!!  Cruelty to livestock, that's what it is.

I do tip 20% or more, though I will go down if someone is incredibly rude.  I also tip cash, even if I am charging the bill, Just Because.

Oh, I go down on nice people, too.  So no need to practice rudeness on MY account.[;)]
should I remind you of the Sausage Demo at this point?

cjan -> RE: Tipping (11/14/2008 9:52:49 AM)

No need, to remind me , dear. The image of you lustily gobbling my spicy sausage in my living room, in front of all the other Pimpettes, is an indelible memory. Can't wait to do it again !

I didn't use to tip very much at all.... I figured "Hey, these people get paid...."  But then, I went to beauty school, and my teacher explained to me that I was now in a tipping profession... and I was getting tips from people too for my services... but I would get all pissed if someone didn't tip me... So I got more and more into b/c how would I like it, if that was me... It's never a % because I never really have that kind of money (I cook at home.. if I go out, it's someone elses idea)... But I give what I can... usually like $5... But I always wait until someone else puts money down... that way, the $5 isn't all they get... :)

theobserver -> RE: Tipping (11/14/2008 10:49:18 AM)

Surprisingly this is quite an issue when I go out dining. In the past, some of my friends and I have been subjected to poor service, based on the initial stereotype that we will not tip (or tip well) ... I'll leave it to your imagination as to why.

So, I have unfortunately found myself over-tipping to compensate for others ignorance (wait staff and poor tippers).

I worked at a couple of restaurants a while back and I know the stereotypes that build up among servers. I was a hostess and I remember one day, having a server charge up to the host stand and yell at me for purposefully sitting him with a certain demographic of people, twice in a row. I told him that I was simply following the rotation and there wasn't any malice, however, this is our job, to serve the people that come through the door.

So with that in mind, I make sure to tip, even if the server is shitty and inattentive. I do it to make it easier on the next person that share a commonality in appearance with me, it's sad it has to be that way, but oh well. If I can't afford to tip, then I don't go out to eat.
