ORIGINAL: BeIgnited On the flip side, I absolutely detest being called those names by men I don't know (right off the bat) or don't know well (a few conversations in). But I also dislike being called more "vanilla" pet names--sweetie, honey, etc-- by people I don't know well. They feel patronizing to me. Oh, I'd be in -deep- kimchee. *smiles* I've lived south of the Mason-Dixon for a quarter of a century, and before that I was raised by older parents, whose friends were all those silver-haired grandma types who call people 'honey' and 'dear' and 'sweetie'... I never really saw it as patronizing, and now that I've gotten older (and my memory for names has become so much more erratic ), I find that I'm using 'honey', 'sweetie', and 'dear' much more than I used to, even for people (or maybe -especially- for people) that I don't really know and who haven't imprinted themselves indelibly in my brain.
