Interesdom, thank You so much.  That  clarifies things alot.  At this point in time i've only been in DBSM for five months, never quite understood what collared meant, and had no idea how to ask without feeling stupid.  Many thanks to You, Sir.
edited to add:  to me being owned is much deeper  and much more rewarding than being married.

I do believe that if I should possess any outward symbol from my Sir, it would have greater meaning to me as in regards to commitment.
 
I am owned and thus I know who I belong to.  It is like the closing of a chapter or book and the writing or reading of another.  An outward symbol is yet another book or chapter.
 
I do notice that the OP's profile indicates slave registration. This would be an outward symbol to me, as a submissive, that there is a commitment beyond just being owned.

I'm curious, Interesdom, how you know for sure that those slaves who describe themselves as "collared slaves" are just using the term to indicate not being a "want to be" slave? I ask this because the slaves *I* know who say they are collared, *are* wearing a collar. I also find it hard to believe that you know they aren't actually "collared slaves".

I did not say that all people who describe themselves as collared slaves are using the term in any particular way.  I have not said that those who say they are collared slaves are not collared slaves.

i prefer tattoos over branding. the risk of infection is pretty high with branding. i do not like to damage my property

Actually Interesdom, your post isn't important to me at all but you do imply, whether or not you meant to, that slaves use the term "collared slave" to differentiate themselves from unowned "want to be" slaves.

an un owned slave is not a slave really is it? who is it enslaved to?

My slave wears a steel collar and it has never proved any problem at Airport Security. 

I really don't understand why, but it simply never does.  Shame really!

i think it is the brass in the lock that sets it off. my PA never sets off airport security but the buttons on my bib overalls will.

That makes a lot of sense actually.  The collar I use has a small grub screw holding it in place to give the effect of being a complete circle, so no lock involved.
