or use a water spray bottle (whatever you call that in english) and keep harrassing him/her with it when he or she is lieng on the stairs...also they dont like coke. If I want to eat in peace but my tortie girl refuses to accept it i let her sniff on a can of coke and she jumps off voluntarily....meanwhile she is not as demanding anymore when I have my dinner as she used to be (but some people would consider that as being harsh, so I am told...)

Have you tried spritzing the kitty's face with a light mixure of lemon jiuce and water whenever he lays there?

please do not do this...the lemon will burn his eyes ...

Yes, I will not and cannot spritz him, objects yes, but not him.  The last thing I need is a traumatized cat. He is retarded enough lol. Plus, if any lemon/vinegar was on his fur he would stop cleaning himself too.  Besides, I have to keep the stairs dry.

So far the Vicks is working.  Although his eyes are a lil teary after his run up the stairs.

Gate at the top and bottom should be easy to install. Beyond that, why not get treads? Something grippy that wouldn't be comfortable to lie on.

I second this. It's a pretty mean concept.

I agree with Des about a couple of gates and/or treads.

I got my kitty a little kitty bed. A friend told me he'd never use it, but I put his favorite toy in it, and when I lock him out of my room at night (so I can sleep), he goes right to it.

My understanding cats do not like the feel of plastic from the tape, so put sticky side down. From talking to a cat owner (all her life so far) they dont like mint or orange flavors. My two cats tried to get out of my bedroom by digging up the carpet by the door. I have put tape down (sticky side down), they don't like the plastic. One is fond of unplugging my t.v. and vcr cords from the outlet with her mouth. I have to get orange peel and try that. i bought a bottle of something that you could spray on things and that was to deter the cat but she isn't buying it. LOL

I have jumpo's but those don't seem to work. I will have to try tin foil for the kitchen counters and any tables that i don't want them on. I need to try soda cans with the tabs taken off and coins put inside. Make sure you seal the hole of the can. I need to train them not to jump on certain things.

Good luck with your cat.

I will not use lemon water to spray my cat's face with. Water maybe once in awhile. Make sure you lable your bottle because if you put lemon or vinegar in with the water you don't want to forget and squirt them by ACCIDENT!

Thanks again, seems the smell of menthol is working.  I did change a few of the cottonballs on his favoritie steps though ..to add more Vicks. He seemed to stop on those steps like he was considering if he should nap or not.  So far no goo on the stairs themselves, or on him.

Kittah > Gate.

Your signage is back to front I presume unless it is a giant kitten.

OP have you tried one of those head cones? They are the standard cure for all four legged illnesses it seems. For a kitten you could even make one yourself out of a disposable plastic cup.    \[:D]/

windchymes -> RE: cat with bad habit (11/15/2008 7:49:41 PM)

The gate idea would work for dogs, but all the cats I've ever known can easily vault right over it.

Satyr6406 -> RE: cat with bad habit (11/16/2008 8:35:31 AM)

I'm not SURE if this will work but, it seems like it might ...

One of those "electronic fences" that people use for dogs. I believe the distance from the transmitter is "adjustable". Placed half-way up the stairs and adjusted for the proper distance would keep the cat off the stairs. Also, it could be turned off during the day.
