This is a bad weekend for a lot of people.  500 homes within a mobile home park seems to be the worst spot (mostly seniors), but one of the local TV stations had a crew in a VERY pricey nieghborhood where the water supply failed.  One million $ home after another is going in there, while the hydrants are dry.

Shit, almost all of those places have huge swimming pools, they could drop a 5" hard suction in one and run three 1 3/4 lines off of it.

Not up in the trailer park.

Even if you ran those lines, with your pumper, the guys manning it would probably die and the truck be destroyed when the fire overran their position.  You've got 70 mph winds and embers flying everywhere.  When the fire comes up to you, it starts sucking the oxygen out of the atmosphere and engines die (this happened in the '91 Grizzly Peak (Berkeley) fire and stranded people.)

thornhappy (been too close to a several fires out there)

I'm very sorry to hear that TheHeretic.  Seems like folks in California suffer more natural disasters than any other part of the country.

Will you be okay?

I'm told for the very high end homes, $10 million and up, insurance companies pay for helicopters to drop flame retardant chemicals on the homes. Cheaper to pay $50,000 or so per home than pay out $10,000,000.

You might want to check on that source, Des.  The nature of wildfires would make the logistics of such a thing pretty tricky.  It's not completely outside the realm of possibility, but I've never heard of it.  And homes in that sort of price range range were burning last night along the coast, north of LA.  Homes in that range were also in serious danger in the neighborhood without water I mentioned, and there weren't any air assets mentioned at all by the reporters on the ground.

It's our delightful four-season climate, Candy.  Fire, mudslide, earthquake, and riot.

Yeah, and this year's fire season started early and harsh.  We had a small brush fire just on the edge of town this week that was quickly contained.  Hot, dry air + dry brush and Santa Ana winds make for big firestorms, just add a spark.

I heard on the news that about 800 homes have been destroyed.
My prayers go out to all that have lost almost all they own.

So far I have not heard of any loss of life, that is a good thing.
