babygirlkitten -> Corset repair. (11/15/2008 8:28:22 PM)

I have an underbust that I've had for approximately 8 years, with metal boning. At the rear near the laces, the boning is poking through the corners, and comes further loose when I attempt to wear it.
Is there a way to repair this, and/or is there someplace I can have it repaired?

It somewhat depends on the construction of the corset. If it has binding round it, I would carefully unpick the stitching of the binding back past the offending spot, then take strong fabric (tough denim, say) and stitch a patch over and around the edge of the corset. If I think I can do it without a big bulge, I would make it two layers. I would then replace the binding, using thread in the same color as the binding to do a satin stitch over the hole the stay had made in the binding. If anyone is looking so very closely as to be able to see the patch, one would hope they would be looking at something other than the corset. (grin)

This is not a difficult job, but it is tedious and exacting. Which is why I don't make corsets any more, the entire process is tedious and exacting.

There might be a few cobblers in Manhattan who offer repairs also for corsets, I had a leather one repaired a few years ago when I lived there and it was an amazing job, cost about $25.

In case you attend local munches, there are usually a lot of people who make stuff or can at least direct you to where you could have it repaired.
