You are in a big enough city. You need to find and attend a local munch. Do a google for your city, BDSM, munch, and you should probably find one. It's a nice, casual, low key event, most of them occur monthly, in a public resteraunt, dressed in normal street clothes. It is just other people like you getting together to talk. Everyone there will be into or interested in some facet of BDSM to some degree or another - nothing even remotely like playing will go on there. about half the conversations usually focuses on BDSM, about half on other topics. People do meet at munches, but it is considered rude to be to obviously cruising - this is a place for socializing. But regular attendance will probably get you invited to occasional paly parties, and that is very fun.
Other than that - participate actively in some forum boards, like this one, for instance - and there are others. That is a good way to get to know some people to, and to learn. Not saying that you should take what is said on boards such as this as any kind of expertise, but you do learn from being around others.
Mostly, just concentrate on making friends, relaxing, being yourself and having fun. The rest will follow.
