FR--

Ok, help me out here.  Since when is Spam considered a "comfort food"?

MzMia -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 6:37:40 PM)

Most of the people that eat SPAM, use it as a cheap meat substitute.
IF people are buying more SPAM, it stands to reason it is because
they can't afford real meat.

I am so happy that I am a vegetarian, and even grow most of my own veggies.

If Spam were the only meat product available I would be a vegetarian.

As for what it is.........I saw a "how do they make that" on some educational channel. Spam is all the pork bits left over. Similar to the stuff they put in hotdogs.

I confess.  I like Spam.  But I only get a taste for it about once or twice a year.  Fry it till browned, drain off the fat, and make a sammich with it.  With nice, dark pumpernickel (sp?) bread, a dab of spicy brown mustard, a slice or 2 of Swiss cheese, and 'lots' of leaf lettuce.  Pretty good.

My boy loves the stuff.  He could eat it every week.  He also likes "Vienna Sausages", and "Potted Meat".  [:'(]  Now that is something that I **REALLY**  don't want to know what's in it!!   Just the very name of the stuff (potted meat) makes me cringe.  He also loves hot dogs, and could eat them every day.   I worry about all the nitrates/nitrites in those things, and the fact that they are proven carcinogens.   Of course, every time he has hot dogs, he has to show me that he can deep throat the whole thing.     Damn show off............

I can understand the rise in sales of Spam and other comfort foods.  They take many of us back to our childhood when life was simpler, and we had no clue that life could be so tough.    And with the economy going nuts, comfort foods are cheap.   Not necessarily healthy, but cheap.

Can anybody tell me why eating healthy is so expensive??  Look at hot dogs for example.  A one pound package costs 99 cents most of the time, even seen some on sale at 2 for a buck.  Yet a half-pint of fresh blueberries usually runs 2 for $5 or $6.  Blueberries are a superfood -- high in antioxidants, vitamins, and very high on the list of the most beneficial foods you can eat.  But who can afford even a week's worth of them?

There's just no logic in that -- bad food =cheap.......healthy food = expensive.

Actually, you can eat healthy very inexpensively. It just isn't convenient. Healthy and convenient are expensive.

If you are willing to buy the raw products and cook, healthy can be economical.

~FR~

" What does make you a bit queasy is the nutritional labeling on the side of the can. A single serving — two thin slices — contains 30 percent of your daily saturated-fat quota, 31 percent of your sodium, and 13 percent of your cholesterol. If people ate Spam exclusively we'd solve the Social Security crisis in a generation. Nobody would live long enough to collect.
On to your questions. The common assumption is that Spam is made of stuff even pigs don't like to admit they've got. Not so, says a spokeswoman for Hormel Foods, which manufactures Spam. It contains a mixture of ham and chopped pork shoulder. (Ham is the pig's thigh; pork is everything else.) Ham is Hormel's top-of-the-line product, and Spam was created in 1937 partly to use up what was left of the pig after the ham had been removed. But only the wholesome parts. "

Exactly. Raw fruit/vegetables aren't expensive as long as you buy locally/when in season. Chickpeas and other legumes are ridiculously cheap. Whole grain items are usually close in price to their white counterparts. It's easy to eat cheap and healthily, you just have to put in some effort.

Your link suggests that spam tastes of humans.
I was already aware that there were some people out there I wouldn't eat. Now I can back this up with data.

You should read some of their other articles. It is a great site and they have their staff do the testing on themselves.

Actually, if the article is correct on it being $3.20/lb, it's not really that cheap. The main advantage is that it keeps better than any fresh meat. Good protein source if you're hoarding goods to see you through an apocolypse [:)]

If you can't afford meat do yourself a favour and catch a pigeon or seagull or something. Just don't buy Spam.

Also watch out for pies in the UK such as steak and kidney, minced beef (yeah) and chicken and mushroom.

Some of the scariest stuff I ever read was however in Poland. Like the bottled water company which bottles water from its source under the site of the Majdanek concentration camp in eastern Poland. As a result I refuse to buy any sort of meat or meat product from any supermarket chain.
