LadyTeazer -> RE: Spam! and other comfort foods have rising sales (11/16/2008 7:00:29 PM)

I confess. I like Spam. But I only get a taste for it about once or twice a year. Fry it till browned, drain off the fat, and make a sammich with it. With nice, dark pumpernickel (sp?) bread, a dab of spicy brown mustard, a slice or 2 of Swiss cheese, and 'lots' of leaf lettuce. Pretty good. My boy loves the stuff. He could eat it every week. He also likes "Vienna Sausages", and "Potted Meat". [:'(] Now that is something that I **REALLY** don't want to know what's in it!! Just the very name of the stuff (potted meat) makes me cringe. He also loves hot dogs, and could eat them every day. I worry about all the nitrates/nitrites in those things, and the fact that they are proven carcinogens. Of course, every time he has hot dogs, he has to show me that he can deep throat the whole thing. Damn show off............ I can understand the rise in sales of Spam and other comfort foods. They take many of us back to our childhood when life was simpler, and we had no clue that life could be so tough. And with the economy going nuts, comfort foods are cheap. Not necessarily healthy, but cheap. Can anybody tell me why eating healthy is so expensive?? Look at hot dogs for example. A one pound package costs 99 cents most of the time, even seen some on sale at 2 for a buck. Yet a half-pint of fresh blueberries usually runs 2 for $5 or $6. Blueberries are a superfood -- high in antioxidants, vitamins, and very high on the list of the most beneficial foods you can eat. But who can afford even a week's worth of them? There's just no logic in that -- bad food =cheap.......healthy food = expensive. LadyTeazer -- proud and happy Owner of [saberwolf34] and still a WOW - Wonderful Older Woman
