No offence was intended, as I for once seek the balance in things, that being neither feminist or male orientated, (is there a word for a male version of a feminist aside from pig or MCP ?). It is just for the past six weeks I have had college lectures on  the effects of feminism on popular culture, lectures by academics, some of whom are feminist and lurve to educate.

It is why I am reading the book, the female gaze as I wish to see the other side of the coin, so to speak.

During Yom Kippur we ask forgiveness for a whole host of wrongs, one of which is translated in my Reconstructionist prayerbook as the wrong of using sex explotovely. The wrong there is clearly on the man who pays for the lap dance, not on the lap dancer. Because he objectifies her, treats her in his own mind as an object and not a person, it is wrong.

Here we talk about informed consent. Is a 19 year old without a high school diploma able to understand that she is being viewed as a thing, not a person? Can she do so if she entered into this field because of a background of abuse which inculcated the idea in her that her only value is to be used sexually? If we say no, then I think she's being exploited.

On the other hand, a graduate student who is knowingly making the decision to do this to put herself through law school is aware of what is happening and therefore isn't being exploited.

But the viewer is still committing a wrong against himself and the community by choosing to negate another's humanity and thus lessening the social structure of the community.

Watching tv today and there was a debate about whether lap / pole dancing exploited or empowered women. The common belief was it exploited them because of the seedy background most people believe exists in the clubs where the women work.

If lap dancers, escorts, and pro d types and s types are definately NOT having sex with their customers is it an ok career choice?
Do you think WITHOUT sex being involved it empowers women or exploits them?
Why?
Does your answer change if sex becomes involved?

It is of course obvious that sex is inextricably involved in such scenarios, regardless of the literal act.

The sway of sex over humans is immense; it can exploit us or empower us—or both. It is simply incorrect to suggest all women who dance erotically, dominate or have sex for money are all victims of the machine. It depends entirely upon each individual and their underlying motives or circumstances.

The nature of sex to exploit or empower are two sides of the same coin. It is this way for both sexes.

It is my belief that women who understand their sexual power and know how to hone it properly will not be victims; they will instead be making victims.

As long as they are not part of the disgusting sex trade that is going on and that it is a choice they made for themselves I see it as empowerment.

What if the "disgusting sex trade" is a choice they made for themselves?

Christine, not sure if your comment was directed at me or not - but to clarify what I mean by sex trade here is an example www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2008/0910/1220919678635.html

As long as people only see the genitalia and not the skill and artistic interpretation of what is going on right before their eyes such performers will never get the respect their talents and expertise deserve. It's a damn shame the way they get fingered by hypocrites as some sort of moral scourge

It's like any job a person does.  Some woman I have talked to over the years loved every minute of their work...others hated it, and were saving their money to get out and do something else.  Many were single moms just trying to put food on the table for their child and were not talking about victims, winners or losers.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Lap dancing, strippers, escorts and Pro D types / s types. (11/19/2008 8:53:59 AM)

As long as no woman is forced into it, it's their choice, no matter if it involves sex or not. I was chatting in a hotel bar with a lady who admitted that she also is here on business, but her business was escorting, I was quite curious and asked if she doesn't mind, she told me she loves it, it wouldn't be my cup of tea but if she is happy with it, I can't see anything wrong.
