A few federal report has been published regarding Gulf War Illness and its causes, pesticides and pills used to counter-act neuro-toxins.
 
Any of the veterans on here or their family members and friends have stories to share about Gulf War Illness?

" WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An extensive federal report released Monday concludes that roughly one in four of the 697,000 U.S. veterans of the 1990-91 Gulf War suffer from Gulf War illness

That illness is a condition now identified as the likely consequence of exposure to toxic chemicals, including pesticides and a drug administered to protect troops against nerve gas.

The 452-page report states that "scientific evidence leaves no question that Gulf War illness is a real condition with real causes and serious consequences for affected veterans." "

I have a relative whose partner suffers terribly from Gulf War Syndrome. He had been in a battle with the Veterans administration for years in an attempt to get the illness recognized and of course, treated.

The government has denied for years that there was even a such thing, meanwhile allowing veterans to suffer and they DO suffer. Terrible immobilizing migraines, nausea, unexplained pains and ect.

It's a shame that it's taken this long to finally get an acknowledgement of the illness. Look how long many men and women have had to suffer in silence.

I've got several family members that have spent considerable time in the middle east, with no ailments at all.

There have been reports about a wide set of ailments for years among Gulf War veterans.  I am hoping that this report is one positive step towards better treatment and rehabilitation for those affected.

It is about time.  It's ashame that it took almost 20 years for this.  I hope now that the government will identify those affected and get them help, as well as reimburse them for money spent out of pocket for treatment, and offer disability.
I wonder how well the government researched the safety of those pills they were giving the troops?

No surprise here!
It was the same thing with "Agent Orange" for 20 years after Vietnam.
They "knew" something was wrong but wouldn't acknowledge it for years.
Just about 10 years ago I was at the V.A. hospital in Manchester, N.H. when I overheard a guy tell someone he knew that he had just been diagnosed with Agent Orange related cancer after that guy asked how he was doing.
"Well the Dr. just told me I have Agent Orange cancer so I'm not doing too good Mike."
I can still remember those words.
I thought to myself, "Damn, Vietnam's been done for 25 years now and it's *still* killing our guys."

Yes, I thought of Agent Orange when the first returning soldiers were reporting their symptom, Popeye.  In some ways I think having an chemical or biological caused set of problems that is not recognized and treated causes more mental distress than other types of combat injuries.

Last I heard the UK Ministry Of Defence was maintaining there is no such thing as Gulf War Syndrome (our guys suffer it too).

Mind you, a bigger bunch of arrogant and insane private school dolts one could not hope to find as one observes in our MoD; anything that went wrong "it didnt", anything where they failed "they didnt", anything they should have done but didnt, they "refuse to countenance". Seriously, they seem to think that the 17th century is where its at when it comes to how things ought to be done; shame for them that in the 21st century medicine and emergency care has progressed to the point that peasants often survive the battlefield.

Perhaps the Kuwaitis could meet the bill on this one?

Ross Perot funded research out of Texas University or the University of Texas that proved it a long, long time ago.  He decided that no one was paying attention and did the job our government should have done.

popeye, I just rewatched "First Blood" with Stallone in his first portrayal of John Rambo. The film starts with a scene of this issue. Even Hollywood knew the truth in the early 80's.

So now there is some form of governmental acknowledgement. I still imagine it will be an uphill struggle for those effected to get proper, or good, treatment, and that the gubmint won't effectively be held accountable.

I would suspect that, just as with Agent Orange, the cause of this ailment among our best and brightest that were marched off to yet another slaughter for power and money was caused by our own.

One of the guys on the crew that I lead has a number of friends and associates in special forces units, and did at one time have a low-level 'secret' clearance.  His claim is that he knows of four of them that, when given the 'nerve gas pill', 'cheeked' them and spit them out when their CO had turned his back.  These were the only four in the unit that did not come down with the dreaded ailment that they claim doesn't exist.   I would bet that whatever that crap was didn't exactly have FDA clearance.

Since this is hearsay evidence to me, I'm not going to claim it as gospel.  It does, however, fit the pattern of our government rushing to the aid of anyone that was injured by outside forces, but wanting to sweep under the rug and admit nothing of its own horrific, irresponsible errors and crimes.  Both Dems and Repubs are equally guilty of this.  It's time to throw all the bums out & begin anew.

Uncle Nasty, correct.
They don't seem to have a problem finding the odd $700B for bailouts but it's somehow always a struggle to come up with money for veterans.
"When they wantcha they wantcha!"
Veteran's pensions aren't too much higher than the poverty rate now.
Hopefully President Obama will be taking care of that.

       Never automatically attribute to malice, that which could just as easily be simple incompetence.  Grand conspiracy theories require one to believe THEY are actually that smart, when all the evidence indicates they are just that stupid.
