Is there a reason no one engages in the chatroom?

To which room are you referring?  The one that is attached to this forum?
I personally hate chatrooms and never go to any of them.  I am not sure, but I suspect that many others feel the same.  If they have IM at all, they probably prefer to save that for private chats at the time of their choosing.
Just guessing...

I am a chatter. I prefer live discussion to threads.

These boards frequently get 'spamed' by the more chatty people among us.  (Myself included.)  I just don't like chatt rooms anymore.  I actually started my 'internet career' on mIRC about 15 years ago.  Used to have a lot of fun on them.   Sadly, they always sort of turn out to be the same... two or three people are talking to each other about things that no one else understands so they can't or won't join in. It's sort of like a private converstation that other people are reading.

I keep forgetting that the chat room exists...  I have never been a fan of the things, the protocols elude me, and while I Talk To Strangers, I have a hard time starting up a dead room.

I have accepted an invite or two on here to chat, but it never goes anywhere.  I type a bit, no response.  I get sidetracked and wander away.  If I want to chat with someone, there is always yahoo.

In one of the chat rooms here I was warned off for saying I feel a bit crappy due to the flu, I found that quite interesting because a bunch of others were discussing fisting quite "in depth"...
