.....President Kennedy was assassinated.

I find anniversaries good times to reflect- how has history changed; what have we learned; have we, as a society, learned anything; what would life be like if this had not happened (or, the 'Quantum Leap' version had occured).

And now, with all the comparisons going on with our new President-elect, this is a date to note and contemplate the future.

Hard to believe it has been that long ago. I was a kid when it happened and have few recollections of the actual event aside from the profound sadness of my father who had worked with the Kennedy campaign and with JFK himself. I have read many suppositions based on "had Kennedy lived" but, put little faith in others view points about such things. History has shown Kennedy to be a much different man in some ways then the perception that Camelot brought about.
His persona was much larger than his legacy, and his legacy was tempered by his short life. The only real comparison to Obama that I can see is the "change" in the populace's voting for someone who represents something different, with Kennedy it was huge that he was the first Catholic elected and of course with Obama his African American heritage. Having read the Best and the Brightest many years a go, I think Kennedy was an idealist much like Obama but, the times were so different. The social issues of today are much less earth shattering but, in some respects not completely dealt with.(human nature will have to change for the completion of what was started in the 60's)

I remember it too, Mark. We were sent home early from school; we didn't know why. When I got home, my father was there---he told my mother all the girls were crying so he sent everybody home (he worked in middle management for GE).

And I remember watching the 60s on TV, the riots in the streets, the assassinations of Malcom X, MLK, Bobby Kennedy, the social clashes over education and civil rights, involving the National Guard, not to mention Kent State. But the death of JFK was the beginning, and even though we survived the Cuban Missile Crisis, I was convinced that I'd never live far into adulthood, that the world would destroy itself before I ever had the chance. All those silly school drills, hiding under our desks or lining up with our heads against our lockers didn't help.

And it crushed a dream. From there we went to Tricky Dick and Vietnam, and trust in government vanished, not to return.
