It is a confusing thing....and to be honest I don't think it is a good thing.....training and it's meaning depends on the spacific Master.....the hardest thing I have ever done is to "train" a slave that some other Master had "trained" before me.....seldome are 2 Masters totally alike in the training of their slaves.....in fact, all slaves that come into my home start as a novice, no matter how long they have been slave, or how many years thery have served or how well they say they have been trained.......that works best for me.

All i can say is being a newbie to the lifestyle and reading this is enlightening. The words, the terms can be so confusing and subject to opinion....

i do like the vibe of mentor, but since i have little experience, "training" seemed okay, too. On the other hand, it makes sense that training would be very individualized to the Dom/Master, whereas "Mentor" might a bit more universal, perhaps(?) in scope.

My heretofore labelled (by me lol) "trainer" has encouraged me to investigate what is going on in this world, while submitting to Him and following not only guidance, but instinct in finding my way. That makes me feel a level of comfort in itself, that He isn't trying to be secretive and exclusive with information, only what W/e do with O/ne another.

Just eagerly reading and learning... thanks, brigid

I think what Elle and I do could be described as "training", and we as "training dominants."

We have a very specific set of positions, rituals, and protocols, and we train those who serve us to do them exactly how we like. Elle and I are each others primary (and only) romantic relationship, so there is never any "romantic love" involved in our training.

We really have trained 4 or 5 slaves together. Some short term, some longer.

I think learning a protocol, any protocol, is a valuable and worthwhile experience...

Training "4 or 5 slaves" to suit your needs (including as a couple) is pretty much what any Dom/me does. I've certainly taught or "trained" my girls in how I want specific things done but that's not the same thing as presenting yourself as a "training dominant" per se'.

And it's the latter which is often abused by those who predominantly seek out newbie subs eager to taste the lifestyle, especially young subs who aren't worldly wise in general.

While I agree that learning virtually any protocol is a worthwhile experience within a healthy D/s environment, that isn't what "training doms" usually have in mind. Forget the ones who only operate online, there are those who use the training guise r/l just to get assorted sexual favours from naive newbies under the pretext of "normal" BDSM experience. To prepare them for service etc....

It's easy to muddy the waters and there's too many who strive to thrive in the grey areas on "training". But there is still a distinct line of difference between the slaves you trained while in your service and your presenting yourselves as "training dominants" to the world at large. I don't mean to imply you're not sincere in what you mean by "training", merely saying its got a bad rep because of abuse and is reasonably regarded as a red flag when a "dom" assumes such a title.

Even without the rep, it sounds pretentious and arrogant in it's own right, anyway. ALL Dom/mes train *their* sub/s! To look at it another way, everybody tells lies but wouldn't you be wary of any self-professed liar?

Focus.

Well... "teaching" is the presentation of previously unknown information and "training" is the modification of behavior; I use the word trainer in my name, because I believe that the end I look for is a significant behavioral modification.

Now, that said, most of the time a D/s relation is not really training, the sub/slave wants to please her Master/Owner and will do what it takes to make him happy; the detailed direction and instruction on his part is no more than saving the time of trial and error on her part -- think of it this way, you go to a restaraunt to eat, you already know how to eat and do not need anyone to show you, but there are many things on the menu... many "trainers" think that simply ordering for you is training, it is not, it is just directing.

Training, as in the transformation that takes place with a doll, is a total modification of behavior and takes experience and a bit of skill on the part of the trainer. Does this make an sense or help out at all?

I believe it's all in the context. The way the OP described it I'd be inclined to believe these are merely Dominants trying to lure a submissive in under the guise of experience. When I talk about training I don't think "make them exactly what I want," I think about educating them, putting them in touch with resources, answering questions, as well as teaching very basic manners and how to be courteous. If someone told me they were a "training" Dom I'd have to ask them what they meant by it.

Training could be any thing from teaching protocol to learning about your limits and to see if this is what they want. Training could being taught how to present yourself to a Master but when you do leave one Master and go to a different one he will train you to his preference and what he expect from you. The one thing never changes is protocol and how you represent your Master when he is not around. The way you carry your self will reflect the kind of training you have had and how good of a job he did with you.
