A farm family in Colorado showed generosity during these difficult financial times by allowing the public to pick free vegetables from their fields after the harvest. Anyone here up for picking left-over apples in an orchard? "Thousands pick up free vegetables on Colo. farm" Sun Nov 23, 2:46 pm ET "PLATTEVILLE, Colo. – A farm couple got a huge surprise when they opened their fields to anyone who wanted to pick up free vegetables left over after the harvest — 40,000 people showed up. Joe and Chris Miller's fields were picked so clean Saturday that a second day of gleaning — the ancient practice of picking up leftover food in farm fields — was canceled Sunday. "Overwhelmed is putting it mildly," Chris Miller said. "People obviously need food." She said she expected 5,000 to 10,000 people would show up Saturday to collect free potatoes, carrots and leeks. Instead, an estimated 11,000 vehicles snaked around cornfields and backed up more than two miles. The Miller's are great people! As soon as I saw the thread, I wondered if it was them. They are very gentle people with huge hearts and do a lot for people. I didn't know them well, but knew of them and met them through my adult kids. That is amazing...

Yes, it is touching by way of generosity and sad that so many are having such a hard time taking care of basic needs.

Agreed. Especially in a world where fast food places lock up their dumpster because they know they threw out edible food and some people are desperate enough to brush the bugs off and eat it. But they can't have it because they didn't pay. T

I have worked in enough restaurants to know that frequently the closing shift will leave whatever is still edible someplace where they can pick it up and take it home rather than throw the food in the dumpster.

40,000 people? no way. besides food does not come from a farm....it comes from a box. i want to learn to dehydrate food...

you can buy dehydrators in the store =p i think walmart sells them? or do you mean just drying it out in the sun?

Great story. As someone else said here, restaurants give leftover foods to charities, but it is really difficult with cooked food since it requires particular care in transport and storage until eaten or bacteria will form rapidly. I know one restaurant that actually stopped giving away cooked food to shelters because they were afraid of lawsuits. Still, the farm story is great and hopefully will spread around the country rather than leaving product on the ground to rot.
