Hey All,

I was hoping I could get some help with some links or information to stores and vendors that sell collars made of materials besides leather, preferably non-metal.

MadRabbit, I do peyote stitch beadwork, or can do loomed beadwork as well.
http://www.madeinsouthdakota.com/Catalog/Product.cfm?shopBy=vendor&vendorId=595&productId=10934  for a sample of peyote stitch on a hair ornament.
Can do a tube or flat.

I would think that would, due to the structure of the grain, would have a weakness in one direction that would cause it to have to be thick enough to be uncomfortable for any length of wear.

You can get inexpensive nylon dog collars at WalMart or most any store that sells pet products.  Hot Topic has a bunch of fashion-trendy synthetic leather look collars.  Most BDSM toy supplier have rubber collars, for the rubber fetishists.  If you decide you want metal collars, there are tons, from solid and heavy slave-type things, to delicate gold chains.  And finally, there is this place:
veganerotica.com    They have all kinds of BDSM toys made out of synthetic leather substitutes.

Not to mention it would be a fire hazard. What if a wooden collar burst into flames and you couldn't get it off? Very bad idea.

Surely this could be avoided by not exposing the collar to extreme heat or a flame (which, being where it is, seems a fair idea). Otherwise my wooden house or computer desk would be a bad idea too.

Other items like rubber can melt, metal can heat till it scalds, so i would say it would just be a matter of, like in most cases, being careful.

My 2 cents

I presume you are joking.  If your slaves neck and head was exposed to enough heat to set wood on fire, a burning collar would be the least of her troubles.

But in the spirit of your reply, I say that the danger of fire nowhere near outweighs the safety benefits of the collar acting as a floatation device incase of a crash landing at sea.  Crashing at sea and setting your neck on fire seem to have about the same likelyhood of happening.

Well after you crash land at sea and the collar keeps you afloat
and provided you are washed ashore, it can be set on fire to signal for help.
I made a wooden collar a while back just to see if I could. Here is a photo.

Edited because it's early and I can't spell.

Most alt lifestyle stores have rubber of vinyl options.  Also, some do fabric.  Chained Desires in Baltimore has a number of attractive non-leather collars; check out their web site and give them a call.  Also, Hot Topic has a lot of non-leather collars that are reasonably priced.
Also, if it's a matter of metal sensitivity, I work in colorized coated metal which is hypoallergenic; you're welcome to c-mail me for pictures of some options.

I have been wondering about the possibilities of making collars and BDSM items out of advanced ceramics, as there is some very interesting materials out there now, even flexible ceramics, shock resistant, machineable, and just plain tough. I believe the material has in it's mix, other substances such as alumina and zirconium. The very use of a circle of this material will help with the structure.

http://www.dynacer.com/properties.htm

I am a metal worker, my interest is art metal, but I am looking more into these materials as a viable alternative, but have yet to understand how they can be succesfully and economically formed in a small workshop enviroment for small scale production. Moulding a collar is an interesting departure from beating the thing out of hot metal or forming out of sheet.

But as per the OP's requirement, perhaps search a friendly ceramicist who has skills in these materials
