LadyEllen -> a new low from the scammers (11/26/2008 4:09:51 AM)

A new low! Now I get email everyday from someone purporting to be a relative or the secretary of some west African tycoon offering me a share of the loot if only I'll help them transfer a few million out of the country - the usual format, 18th century English with grammatical and spelling mistakes.

But yesterday I got a new one; an email on the same subject and with the same intent from someone purporting to be a sergeant in some US regiment in Iraq looking to transfer US government funds they had appropriated.

Given that I think a slow death is in order for the category (a) offenders in the first paragraph, I'm wondering what the penalty should be for the new category (b) offender?

I can just about cope with the idea of Nigerians et al portraying themselves as dishonest, but this is a new low IMO to portray serving US forces members as dishonest.

Because of the Nigerian scammers, everyone of the online community now thinks Nigeria is a population of scammers, crooks and no goods.

Maybe even on this site, the choose a country to search, I wonder how many people select Nigeria, like why go asking for a scammer.

tho if the show fits....     no word on the missing 2.3 trillion$.   that missing money is actual, not a scam.  the budget can not locate where it went.

war does things to people, unflattering things.

alot of people would believe a US general scamming funds...

tho the enemy isnt really the scammer, the general, or even the eleted officials, it is the men that call the shots per the globe.  THOSE men are the traitors to humanity

Do what HM did.
Play along with them for a while.
When they ask for your address, give them the address of your local FBI headquarters.
They quit then.[;)]

I would love to know how many people actually fall for these scams and send money. The most recent ones that I have recieved have been emails telling me that my google ad is about to expire as I have not paid the £14.95 to keep it up to date. Interesting as I don't use google at all. Then there was the email informing me that my Abbey National credit card was over the limit by £18.00 and I would incur extra charges unless I followed the link and paid the outstanding amount. Nice of them to think of me but as I don't have an Abbey credit card not much use to me.

I wonder how many people do fall for these as they are relatively small amounts and easy just to pay and be done with rather than investigate them.

LadyEllen,

You may want to check out this site http://forum.419eater.com/forum/index.php .  It's a site where people discuss how they bait the scammers and make them do crazy things.

They use the "spam" method because it works.  YOU might not have that particular card or use that particular site, but many people do.  If they spam many people with the same request, they get some people falling for it.  You're correct in assuming that 95% of people getting that email realize it immediately to be garbage, and delete it.  But considering it costs nothing to send, and works 5% of the time, it's a pretty good system for them.

LOL....there is a guy from Nigeria working in my department at work.  We tease him all the time about those email scams, and I even got a spam mail from someone with the same first name as this guy, so now we call him "Reverend".  Every time he's late getting back from lunch, "Checking the emails, Rev?" lol  Luckily he's a good sport about it.  And he's really a great guy.

A new low ?
______

I am a relief worker, actually a director of services now stationed in ___ia. The charity organization who funds this has sent me $2,000,000 to facilitate operations here. The problem is there is an error at the bank here, such that I cannot access that money for crucial purposes. Children are literally starving.

The ___ian government is of no help and I have nowhere else to turn. I need you to open an account with at least ten thousand US dollars in it, I will then be able to wire transfer the entire amount to your account because those transactions are not disturbed by the turmoil in ___ia. For this I am willing to give you a reasonable fee of $100,000 US dollars just to get this vital money unlocked. The same glitch in the system that prevents me from accessing the money and disbursing it also prevents me from opening another bank account here and just doing it myself.

These kids are starving, please please help me. Even if you don't have the ten thousand dollars and have to borrow it, I will reimburse your interest on top of your fee. I must get this money, these people are dying, please help.
_____________

Now I need to know how to setup an online pool for betting on how long it takes them to get that low. I could go lower right now, but you probably don't have the stomach for that.
