Cholera has now broken out in several areas of Zimbabwe, threatening to become a pandemic across southern Africa as the population flees in search of the simple treatments that are unavailable in Zimbabwe. Cases have already been reported in neighbouring Botswana and South Africa. With the chemicals required for water treatment and sanitation plants having run out and the plants breaking down, the situation is set to become worse. Channel4 news tonight showed raw sewage running down the streets due to broken infrastructure and clinics meanwhile lack medicine and even drips whereby to combat the dehydration that kills cholera sufferers within days. This on top of a food shortage in what was the breadbasket of southern Africa, enormous unemployment and inflation counted in the millions of percent. The Mugabe government meanwhile maintains that the cholera outbreak is minor and under control, with a disregard for the actuality which is not news when compared to their views of the other problems of the country.
