In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eightyears through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.
Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS'"Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodoxverbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.
But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his publicpronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.
According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the Universityof Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.
"Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are inagreement," says Mr. Logsdon.  "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."
The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using completesentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate - we get it, stop showing off."
The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using completesentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.
"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a waythat ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Buildercan't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

So long as he uses emoticons, to show whether he's serious or joking, I guess that's okay.

*shivers* That's downright creepy GT. A politician who speaks in complete, grammatically correct sentences? How is the American public supposed to understand him?  Now that i think about it, he did the same during the campaign. Surely it must be a plot to get an alien from the planet Zotron elected President of the US and it WORKED! We're all doomed, doomed i say!

purepleasure -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 3:46:03 AM)

You betcha!

zakkan -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:57:05 AM)

Did anyone else notice that neither Palin nor former pres could say Nuclear?!   Oh my god, I wanted to suggest they pick a term and say " every time I say "bite me" I mean to say nuclear., so I don't have to keep repeating nucular and also.   M

Yeah, it's Obama's fatal flaw, at least with Bush there was so much to make fun of. Surely if we look closely there'll be SOMETHING for us to use to amuse ourselves....or we could just make fun of you Lummie. [:D]

Wait!  Are you saying ther will no longer be "nuke you ler war?"

Oh god, what is the world coming to?!

GreedyTop -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:05:21 PM)

if the president can pronounce the word, does that make it less likely he'll use the weapon?

MadameMarque -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:17:25 PM)

Hey, you might be onto some kind of formula, right there.

GreedyTop -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:20:16 PM)

one can only hope, MmeM  (happy turkey day!)

MadameMarque -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:22:34 PM)

Likelihood of war decreases, in direct proportion to the higher intelligence of the President?  OMGoodness, it's so crazy, it just might work!

Happy turkey day, Ms GT :D

SageFemmexx -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:30:31 PM)

As an English major I have found most of Bush's speech appalling. I like Obama's clear diction and grammar--it makes my heart sing. Yay! It is such a joy to find intelligence in such an eloquent package.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Language Alert!! (11/27/2008 4:59:47 PM)

The only entertainment value I get from W's chattering is that it makes for good David Letterman skits.  ("Great Moments in Presidential Speeches")  hehehe.....
