You guys do realize if China starts falling apart, they will no longer be taking our dollars anymore, and probably start dumping the ones they have, leading to a freefall in the dollar, the only reason Paulson and Bernanke are getting away with this money give away is because inflation has for the most part been benign up to now, if the dollar starts falling rapidly then that will not be the case anymore, and inflation will set in quickly.
Right Now, it seems all Ben and Paulson are doing is figuring out how much money has been lost elsewhere and redirecting that lost value into the financials, with high inflation they couldn't do that trick.
A better solution, IMO, for all concerned would be to encourage China to spend, on raising up the 90% of the country that is living in the 1800's via infrastructure improvements. If they do that they'll be buying all kinds of heavy equipment a lot of that from us, also they'll be diversifying there consumption so its not as dependant on the West. During that time period if we were smart, we'd focus on building our production base up a bit here, hopefully in newer tech.
Here's a few items that need true development.
3D printer. These are available now, but are very expensive, but the good ones can print basic objects for you. That would be a must have home consumer item, that would drive sells. Also it would force many computer users to upgrade their systems as good real time CAD rendering type programs require a really good system. But it would be worth it, let's say you break a gear breaks in your Blu-Ray player, a tiny plastic gear, all you'd have to do is go to the manufacturers website download the file for that part print it, and replace the faulty gear. You want a custom computer case, easy just design it and print it. I really want a 3D printer that would rock.
Alternative Energy: Obvious Here, but if we dominate it from a technology perspective, that is a trillion dollar business a year.
Really Cheap LED lighting, LED lighting kicks as and makes flouroscent bulbs look like power pigs. They are just to expensive, figure that out and we'd have another very good sellable product.
Battery Technology: this is probably the biggest limiter we have, hell, if I was Obama, instead of bailing out GM, if I was going to give out free money, I'd dump 50 billion into to battery research.
Relatively Cheap Space Flight: This is a must if we want to dominate for the next hundred years as well, as the resources in space, are literally inexhaustible in our scope needs. But those trillion dollars rocks floating buy need a cheap way of getting to them, and ways to mine them. But just getting it to the point to where we can actually fly to the moon or something is a first step.
Universal Wireless Internet access. This would help all kinds of industries, and individuals be more efficient in managing day to day operations.
A higher temperature superconductor would help a lot as well potentially depending up the temperature. Shove 10 billion in this to. If they find one, that is pretty warm, well, you just revolutionized the computer industry(No or little heat), you can upgrade the whole power transmission scheme to have potentially zero power loss.
There are more things that are worth researching and building a new production base around, but I'm not so sure competing for the privilege to build consumer junk that china builds is a wise move.
Oh, and Nanotech. in general is vital to any leading economy of the future. Hell, dump another 100 billion into that as well. There are so many applications for Nanotechnology its crazy.
