I've always thought there was something incredibly seductive about pictures with blindfolds.  Whether the picture capture someone sneaking their blindfold off, or a shy smile with the blindfold on...ah!  I think that is something that vanilla people would find erotic as well, since it denotes sexiness more so than kink.

ultimateteach -> RE: Erotic Imagery (11/29/2008 10:24:23 PM)

They are absolutely as erotic and have to be handled with the same kind of feeling as any other shot.
Is she really as powerful as you think, does her authority shine thru and show up on his face, is the submissiveness of his pose genuine, is there true fear or shock value in the photo, do I feel he or she is real or does it look like he or she could take charge at any time ( dead give away for a faked shot )
IS THE SHOT BELIEVABLE, CAN YOU FEEL THE EMOTION IN THE SHOT ?

mummyman321 -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/1/2008 6:05:27 PM)

I've had a long fetish rubber/latex attire. Yes everyone immediately thinks of the whip yielding, busts hanging out Domme photos. No I am not going there. I think it is really erotic to show a woman dressed in full length evening dress or a business suit or some other everyday high class or professional attire. Not too revealing, completely professional but the material is latex/rubber. So maybe a woman in an evening dress being waited on by a waiter in a nice resturant being serve a glass of wine. If not for the latex material, everything would look like a normal photo and no one would think twice. But having the dress out of latex gives an erotic edge to the photo. Not only visually, but also gets the mind going.

I am hoping to figure out what other people would appreciate, to vary my subject matter.

Sometimes we don't know until we see it.

I understand that you are fishing for inspiration, so my sugesstion as a photographer is to forget the subject and instead concentrate on the composition of the image.  You can have a good shot of someone in a collar, but a better and more erotic shot depending on how you shoot it.  The design and direction of the shot is far more important than the image itself.  If your not good at telling the story, then the image itself won't be erotic to anyone.  Some people take really good photos - they just get the shot, but there is no sensation (art direction)behind it so people can't feel it.  A good director can take that image and create something special by moving or finding the right angle.  Which is why sometimes photographers have to work with a concept artists or directors, because although they have the tech nowhow, they lack imagination.

Another bit of advice I would suggest is do not concentrate on what other people might like.  I get you are trying to get ideas which rocks because you can't try if you don't know.  However don't get wrapped up in the subject but take images of things you love and that you find erotic because then it comes through the lens.  When you photograph subjects that don't light your fire, it shows.

One of the most erotic images I ever saw was in black and white (always highly erotic for me for some reason).  The woman was being taken from behind ... both figures were gorgeous, which always helps, but it was the power and the dominance that shone through for me.  She was on her knees, face pressed to the bed, hands out to the side, fingers splayed ... he was inside her from behind, with just his hand touching her, holding her lower back.  It just spoke of surrender to me, with nary a fetish or whip in sight.  I also really like a photo when the subjects don't appear to know that their photo is being taken - when I feel more like a voyeur than having someone pose for me.

The one image that stands out first and foremost in my mind was a rope suspension performance I watched in a club. She was a very beautiful and dainty Chinese woman and she had been roped up and suspended with her head slightly down and legs raised slightly above her head. The photographer was rushing round snapping away but I caught the image he missed. As her head lay back and her thick black hair cascaded towards the ground I witnessed one tear escape her eye, role down her cheek and drip to the floor.............. Magic!

I posted something along these lines on FetLife, but I am curious to get some answers here as well.
Fetish photography is pretty simple. When you have a fetish you know cut and dry what you want to see. High heel fetish doesnt haveĀ  ton of wiggle room on subject matter, just on prop decision. Same with my collar fetish.

However, erotic imagery is very subjective. What I see as hot might not do anything for someone else.
So, I am curious, what do you see as erotic.

For me, suggestive is erotic. I do not really find naked genitals erotic most of the time, but hinted nudity can be. Bondage can be, too, when it is not so tight the person looks in pain. And interactions between people that leave you wondering what goes on after the photographer puts down the camera definitely trip my trigger.
Most of the time when I ask this question the responses back tend toward the female shape, which is all well and good. I have a male model, so those ideas do not help me much.

So, what about everyone else?

HMMMMM DV Ma'am for me its like suggestive like you said. complete genital nudity not much so as it innocently hid by the falls of a flogger or the groping hands of Master. there can be many things i just cant think of many examples right now.

It isnt so much that I am fishing for inspiration as I am trying to broaden my horizons. I am very visual when ti comes to my asthetics, but when it comes to things being erotic, my tastes are way off of the norm. Mainly, very little strikes me as erotic. I am hoping that by getting input from others, I'll find some other things that do strike me, and I'll be able to run with it and make them my own.
I do not find nudity or sex appealing, at all. No matter how artistic the image is, I dont find it erotic if it is of sex or naked genitals. Hinted nudity, sheer clothing and things like that maybe, but even then. Ive always had a fairly difficutl trigger to trip. I am trying to make my art better, and since I cant see things that way I am hoping to see things through smeone elses ideas and see if I can play off it.

You're in Nashville? I've been thinking of moving there.

You've got Collin Rae and Craig Seay in your backyard...great fetish/alt shooters.

At least for inspiration purposes alone, you should poke at them.

VampiresLair -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/2/2008 4:05:05 PM)

I might just do that. And yes, we are not far from Downtown Nashville. Every time around here I have mentioned the idea,, I have been directed to the Mark. I do not like clubs and avoid that sort of environment. So, i was at a standstill. Though i have a few other friends who are also photographers who seem to think that for someone with no sense of what is erotic I do a pretty good job of it.
All my photography has feeling, its just whether or not its erotic or something else that im working on.

oceanwynds -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/2/2008 4:11:19 PM)

Perhaps try some of the erotic imagery in black and white, since it tends to bring more of the emotions out, imo.

Simplicity is what I enjoy in different locations. Perhaps a man being cuffed to a tree and waiting, would be one thing to explore. What is he waiting for? What is the expression on his face? Is there a hint of someone near by watching him?

If you do poke at them, tell them I sent you.

In the meantime...do you have an online portfolio at all?

Back to the point, though...it seems you've already figured out what is "erotic" to you. That's the first step...because you're going to need to infuse your own eroticism and fetishism into your imagery. The intimacy comes from knowing what you want and, only afterward, getting it in the shot.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/2/2008 4:20:31 PM)

I have the beginnings of one, mostly its just what is posted in Foxs and our couple profile. I'll be building a bit more on fetlife now that I have an account there.
I am far from new to photography, simply trying something different. Artistically, I have no problems. And so it seems some of what I shoot is erotic to others, even if I didnt see it that way. So, thats what im trying to learn. What do others find erotic.

You have a 500Gg external hard drive handy to house the typed-out list?

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/2/2008 4:29:02 PM)

No, but the short list wouldnt be a bad jumping off point.
Like I said earlier on, the majority of the responses I have goten in conversations have been "Fmeales, in various positons and degrees of nudity"
which does nothing for me, personally, nor does it help my learning about taking photos of others until i have rliable female models.

See? Heh. We're back at what you find erotic. what anyone else finds erotic is kind of secondary, really. When you start getting a good ratio of "this is what I envision in my head" to "this is the result I got" shots, then worry about spreading out to other niches.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/2/2008 4:43:49 PM)

*sigh* OK this has gotten to the point where it isnt going to be helpful anymore I suppose.
What I am trying to get across is that I have a HUGE ratio of What i envision to what I get.
Thats awesome. However, I want to be able to take photos of other people FOR them to enjoy and get ideas on what others might like, not just me. I didnt think that was such a difficult concept.
I know what I like and I can photograph what I like without a problem. I cant see what others like, but I am not taking photos strictly for myself. If I were, Id never have asked what others found erotic. I wouldnt care. I do, however because I want my photography to go somewhere.  I dont have to personally find it erotic to know it is or should be... but when I know others think that way its enough of a clue.

DrkJourney -> RE: Erotic Imagery (12/2/2008 4:44:08 PM)

For me, I like my images to be in black and white.   I love looking at men, especially when there are two together, I have quite a few gay images and video.  They can be in bondage, punishment, or holding a position.   I like a look of passion about them, not like that are posing for a pic, but a look about them like they are actually in a session, before or during sub space.

I also like the fantasy drawings, color or black and white...like of knights and warriors at their ladies feet or on the end of her whip.

um...did it just get hot in here?.....lol
