. . . communicate something so that the widest amount of people will read, using slashyspeak is not a good way to accomplish that goal.

Well, precisely.  Hence my policy regarding specific women only.

PeonForHer -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 12:22:55 PM)

girl thinks that

Yyyyessssss.  I recall a recent example of a woman doing that in various posts.  Nearly everyone ignored her.  It looked self-indulgent and, TBH, slightly looney.

yourMissTress -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 12:27:20 PM)

I hate slashyspeak as much as I hate "subbie" and domme pronounced any way that doesn't sound like dom.

But you didn't ask how I prefer to communicate.  If you are in a relationship, I suggest you ask your mistress how she would like you to communicate and follow her wishes.

(1 * dominant) + (enforcing a submissive's incorrect capitalization and slashy speak) = delusions of grandeur? [8|]

Well true, E2Sweet, but aren't dominants allowed some egotism?  Does go with the territory a bit, surely?  And I'd guess that many or most subs wouldn't mind a measure of that; indeed, positively like it!

Hello ,

In reading the many posts on the forums i seem to get quite confused as to W/who is a Dominant and W/who is a submissive !

Please allow me to first say that i am not judging O/others on how T/they write .

While reading the posts i often see a submissive that signs their name with a capital letter as well as themselves as in ... I , Me My, etc..

Is protocol more laxed while writing on the forums ?

Should i not write W/we , U/us or O/our when speaking of my Mistress & i ?

Just checking [:)] !

Advice greatly appreciated .

Thank You,

Respectfully
girl

You do what your most comfortable with bratb. If your comfortable using those ways of communication, screw anyone who tells you otherwise.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 1:06:46 PM)

It was probably what her training dictated she do, and her Dom said she do. So it really doesn't matter who doesn't like her posts, What matters is she's doing what she's told to do, and thats what good subs and slaves do. Follow orders.

Now it is unfortunate when what your Dominant orders makes you unpopular or gets you ignored, specially if they tell you specifically to come ask questions, However then it may be up to the slave or sub to politely bring it to the D's attention that the required writing protocal is making mostp eople ignore her. Then it's up to the D to decide to change it or not.

I disagree that it's an illusion of grandour to enforce your submissive to do things they way you want them to. Hell that's the whole point of being the DOM and her the submissive. She does what YOU THE DOM says to do.

moonvine -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 1:18:10 PM)

I was an English major, so writing in standard English is a hard limit for me - gosh I seem to find more hard limits every day!  I think I would be completely incompatible with anyone who wanted me to type in slashyspeak anyway.

It would also lead me to believe she hasn't been given specific instruction since she's asking the board what to do, but who knows.

elegantalexis -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 1:23:49 PM)

Just use standard English and what your Master or Mistress has indicated to use.

Since our profile is for a couple, I am usually refering to myself since my partner does not partake of the boards too often.  People can tell when she does though (misspellings and grammar misuse).

undergroundsea -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 5:37:05 PM)

I dislike slash speak and have neutral feelings about the capitalization convention when addressing one person. I am open to using the capitalization convention if a person who I am pursuing, or with whom I have a relationship expresses an interest in it.

I have seen people of whom I otherwise hold a good opinion use each slash speak and the capitalization convention. Therefore, I do not dismiss a person entirely on this one point alone.

Cheers,

Sea

MrQwerty -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 5:43:36 PM)

IMHO slaves should not type anyway unless typen to, they should just lurk at the top seen but not read. i demand it and so it shall be...[8|]

ShaktiSama -> RE: To CAPITALIZE or not ? (11/29/2008 5:48:51 PM)

Even if you must use Protocol Speak...please, can we all give up the slashes?  Go with Latin rules:  a group with even one male member was masculine neutral plural in Rome, and today it would serve just as well if a group with even one dominant was dominant neutral plural.  So a pronoun applied to you and your dominant could be "We", not "W/we"--perhaps we could consider this compromise?

If people wish to use lower-case letters to mark their identity as submissive, that is fine with me.  I find a submissive attitude sexy in the right person, and when approached the right way.  As for all this bunk about "Proper English"--ugh, count me out.  I know enough about linguistics as a science to know that "Proper English" is a pretty worthless concept, and it's almost never invoked unless you have an oppressive agenda--whether that agenda is class-based, gender-based, racist or "age-ist" doesn't make much difference.

"Proper English" is English that gets your point across and connects you with people who respect your identity.  If Protocol Speak is going to help you connect with the right partner, more power to you.

I don't understand this attitude -- surely it is important for any of us to understand how best to communicate with one another?

For the OP... with a few exceptions, I find that common English works best for communicating what one has to say on such a medium. For me, the exceptions come because I am understanding of those who are under speech restrictions like 3rd person and capitalization-of-address protocols. Perhaps it is because we use speech protocols, but I find that, even for the clumsy speakers who are still struggling to adapt to the restrictions that they are under, it often behooves me to remember that I was a beginner once, too, and give them the benefit of the doubt.

I would recommend that you speak with your Mistress about what her preferences are for you on the boards, and then do your best to communicate and take your time to make sure that you've expressed yourself in a way that shows respect for yourself, your Mistress, and the people you are communicating with, according to her preferences. If she has no rules for you on that score, then common English, good manners even when passionate, and appreciating the dignity of even those who seem to fail to recognize their own dignity will probably serve you well for all your years on these boards and many others.

Aww, but you know...I just sometimes cannot resist capitalizing She and Her.  Darn it, I revere Her, and I love Her, and it is She whom I serve...seems only fitting to give Her a cap darn it...crucify me if you must...

No, what difference does it make if you are dom, sub, switch, straight, gay, bi, transgendered, transexual, asexual, etc etc if you are having a conversation about what books you like, or what have you.

I see nowt wrong with any of that, Otters - good luck to you.

Actually, Underground Sea made a point once about ways of language being used that can be a turn-on.  I know what he means.  When I say, " . . . I'd speak this or that way with my domina if she told me to" - I don't mean that as a grudging thing.  Quite the opposite, actually.
