Once one has convinced oneself of a world-wide cabal that pulls all the string, taking some bread from the shelter is easily rationalised. [8|]

I guess I do feel bad this morning.  I would prefer to buy my stuff at a low price.  We have a surplus store -tho it is a few miles from town.

the place the other day, I had been a frequent volunteer to.  so much so- that a few years ago they gave me a washer, dryer and refrigerator.

Term, I get the essence of your point.   20 years ago- I did things like that because I had too.   These days, Im not nearly as bad as that.

as compared to to others, I dont view me as any more or any less corrupt.   certainly my unique window to the world is confusing to some.

so what do you want to hear?  I am the worst guy on earth, or I am holy and pure.    We all eat and poop and breath... I am typical in that I am muddling thru life, making it up as I go.  Indeed I tried to unleash my talks with mr R when I was a kid.  He was like your dad Term.

I better get ready for my incarceration at getmo.  oh lordy lordy- my it is hard to be humble.   :-)

i like that!

the meaning is sinking in.

It was not worth it per the expense of loosing respect of people on this list.   I get it.

I get it.

I don't.  Everyone can give something, and most everyone needs to receive something.

Give what you can, when you can.  Then you are a generous person.

it is funny to think back at key moments in life.

a guy routinely sends in every year $100 to the red cross.  he is just a laborer.  he has modest earnings.

in years past I have worked the shelter. Ill never forget a few of the people.  when one does this, one catches onto the nuts, the scammers and those truly in need.

anyhow I voluteered for the overnight.  a call came at 2am.   I thought, who the heck is drunk now.  I was instructed that the police were dropping off a couple to feed them and give them room 3, that the paperwork will be done the next day.

I only had leftover noodles to heat up for them.  the woman said very little.   the man had left the area to find work.  they fell on hard times and wanted to come home. As i said, when around this mode long enough one picks up on the gist of it fast.   anyhow they trecked back east, they were almost home when the engine blew on their car. the posture of this couple, the tone of the voice, the eyes...  what they said, how they said it. when I asked, the man did have a job promise here, back home.
the next day they were gone.  I often wondered what happened to them.      shelter volunteering is a dicey job.   anything can happen...and it does.
a voluntter was sent to the hospital from being attacked.  of course it was all kept hush hush.

my point is- what are the moments you remember in life?

it isnt trivial things.

Termyn8or -> RE: Early data shows strong Black Friday shopping (12/1/2008 9:16:17 AM)

Hunky, don't sweat it then, if you give and have given all is well. If it is true that you give and have given I'll take it all back.

There are a hell of alot of people who just take and take and take and never give. Then human nature being what it is assumptions happen.

Probably you should give them a box of that cereal, if you got it for less than four bucks a box your wallet is ahead, and you have done your good deed.

Anyway, if I may be so radical as to jack this thread back on track, I wonder what the weekend retail numbers look like. Black Friday is but one day. People need to stay jolly and merrily plunk down their plastic for more than one day to make the season for retailers. Being Monday though I don't think those numbers are available. My predictions on that would not be considered optimistic.

We'll see.

BlackPhx -> RE: Early data shows strong Black Friday shopping (12/1/2008 10:06:13 AM)

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are a start and the traffic and sales were up over last year. Most of the shoppers were not those in foreclosure or bankruptcy but people who saved for the holiday season, who take the time of discounts to stretch their buying power and to have something under the tree. Many maintained the discipline of the Christmas Club Account (remember them?) and salted away, some like Master and I also take advantage of 0% interest 0 Payments for a determined length of time and invest the money that would be payments into stocks or interest bearing accounts, taking a small profit that can be rolled over to the next project or gift season. We did that with the replacement windows for our house, the money from the state grant is earning interest while our portion grows as we put away the payment each month for the year of the 0% interest 0 payment loan. That loan will be paid off before the due date and the profit reinvested in our next project (the bathroom tub needs to be replaced therefore keeping a plumber and a tile company another day). The lap top I am posting from was bought that way and a portion of the incentive Bush sent out is growing to make up the other half. We have one credit card and never let it get higher than we can pay off immediately if a disaster happens.

But every dollar that is spent is cumulative and can help a store stay open 1 more day, keep food on the table for 1 more family.  We have funiture stores here that are offering 0/0 until 2014, BUT they will move product, keep someone employed and get paid, because the finance companies will pay them and hope that you default and have to pay the catch up interest. If you have the discipline it is a good way to buy even in these times, just don't over extend. Those loss leaders get people in the stores and people will impulse buy or up-buy. meanwhile that item is not sitting in the warehouse gathering dust until sold to a liquidator.

We recycle (recyclers employ people and the products they collect go to manufacturer to use to make items that will cost less die to recycled materials and employ more people), Freecycle ( if it is good enough to stay out of the dump, that is less environmental impact and helps someone else..) and renovate rather than buy, until we are in a position to build exactly what we want. Meanwhile we are keeping contractors, manufacturers and service people working.

That is how this economy will get healthier, the same things that your grandparents did during the depression. Save, use it up, fix it, pass it on, or do without.

Oh and PaHunk..you can make bread in a Dutch Oven over your hot plate. Mix it the same way you would for a oven , place a pie tin or something in the bottom of the DO and bake covered. Bread only needs the heat to reach all areas to bake. I made bread and meals over a hibachi during the 2004 hurricanes. You may also want to look up a recipe for Naan.

P.S. Obama has already said it is likely to get worse before it gets better, not only here but around the world.

thornhappy -> RE: Early data shows strong Black Friday shopping (12/1/2008 2:38:22 PM)

I read today that while the sales numbers were ok, so many items were deeply discounted that folks are worried about the profits.

The people up here in my area must not have cared about Black Friday, because most of the parking lots were empty.  And I think I only took care of somewhere around 3 dozen customers in my store over the course of my entire shift.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Early data shows strong Black Friday shopping (12/15/2008 9:17:55 AM)

Wait, I thought everything was A-OK.

The clock is winding down on what could be one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in decades and recession-hit shoppers are finally starting to feel some pressure to spend.
But toy stores, electronic outlets and clothing boutiques are also under pressure to get shoppers to loosen their purse strings by offering steep discounts, analysts and retailers say.

I guess it's not A-OK after all...
