Greetings All,

I have paid about $30.00 per month for dental insurance with a major insurance company and that was money well spent when needing some work done.  It is coming time for an eye exam and maybe some new glasses so I will be checking into vision insurance.  Anyone paid for vision on their own before and have any recommendations on insurance carriers?

Thank you,

Vendaval

Any vision coverage I have ever had has just been some "token" insurance plan where there is a very limited group of eye doctors you can actually go to, and what they pay for is also very limited.  I found it cheaper to just go to the "discount" eye places and pay their full price.

I can recommend "America's Best" eyecare.  I was new to the area, needed contacts and glasses, and just stopped in to schedule an appointment.  They got me in the same day.  They switched me over to soft disposable lenses, something I've asked other eye doc's to do for 20 years now, and they all refused, for various reasons, since I wore hard and gas perms for most of my life.  The soft ones are wonderful and I haven't had vision this sharp and clear ever, I think.  But anyway...I joined their "club" which was $99, and for that you get unlimited eye exams for 3 years, and a year's supply of the contacts were another $99.  The glasses, since I take high-prescription and added bifocals (ugh), were a whole $140.  ( I bought cheaper frames, though...there were some really high-priced "designer" frames available )  Exam, year's supply of contacts and new bifocals for under $350.  The only things I'll have to pay for for 3 years are the contacts.  This is way less than I'd have paid with any vision plan.

If you have the option to get a flexible spending account to pay for medical stuff with pre-tax money, it's almost guaranteed to be a better bet than vision insurance. Every vision plan I've run numbers on has ended up being more of a savings plan than anything else- you might turn out *slightly* ahead if you jump through all the hoops correctly, but it'll cost you time and options.
