Looking in the Firefox forums, many it seems are reporting slow running, freezing and crashes, but unless you are au fait with programming, the solutions are pretty useless.

I have just run my security software and the online scanner Trend Housecall, no problems reported, yet I still have problems with Firefox. I just hope it is not another vista problem.

Freezing and the report, ''Mozilla Firefox not responding'' is a daily occurance. The only way out is to close the browser and restart. The most annoying problem is where one happens upon a website that won't load, the error page, I dread those, as it is as if the browser falls down a deep hole and can't get out, no amount of clicking, double clicking and repetitive double clicking will get the browser to go backwards.

Oh, I have already tried reinstalling, same crap.

I know what's wrong... you're not running a MAC!!! *grins*

Ok, any browser recommendations, for I have had enough of Mozilla Firefox. Version two had problems, now version three is worse, I have had enough.

I just want something that is resonably fast, lightweight and doesn't keep crashing, anything out there worthy of a mention?

Had a friend tell me about a newer browser, apparently it's easy to use and they like it better then IE or Firefox.

Solutions:

1. Install a Linux system.

2. Try Epiphany or Seamonkey.

Safari works very well. If you have apple or Windows you can use Safari. Also, if you have a MAcintosh there is another free browser you can get called Camino. Thats very good too.

Shoot! Duh, You werent talking about broswe programs.[&:]

Faldegast -> RE: Firefox still sucks ! (6/13/2009 3:48:11 AM)

If firefox has problems its usually because of the plugins. Start by getting a good adblock plugin.
Pages with a lot of JavaScript, Flash and other thing that requires client-side execution do slow any browser down. A lot of it is ads, and an adblocker will remove them.

Flash is usually a problem. Try uninstall and reinstall flash. Other plugins like Java and media players can also cause problems.

And yeah, Vista is still a new operating system. Any new version of Windows usually requires a few years of maturing before software as complex as a web broser works fine.

I've used Firefox for years now... practically from the beginning.  Occasionally when they've had new versions come out, I've had minor problems, but those are usually fixed pretty quickly.  I did have reason to cuss up a storm and start checking out new browsers when Firefox 3.0 came out... it was crashing right and left on me, several times a day.  Because I do much of my work online, this was not good.

After much research (and trying out a few new browsers), I finally went back to Firefox 2.0 and then made sure it was set to NOT update automatically.  You can find all the earlier versions here.

Since then, I have updated to 3.0 and have been very careful about what add-ons I use.  It's been a few months now and so far I haven't had any problems.  I do believe it was the plug-ins that were causing issues for me.

You might disabling your add-ons, then carefully enabling one at a time (giving it a day or two before the next) to see if you can determine if one of them is the offender.

I don't see any mention of cuil offering a browser, on their site.  It's a search engine.  I wonder what your friend meant.

I use Firefox in Windows and use it as Iceweasel in Linux.

I always immediately install "NoScript and "BetterPrivacy" as addons.
I also use older operating systems and and I am very careful about
adding anything including any automatic updates.  So far no problems
even on very old machines.

I have a friend who has just built a couple of new multiple boot machines.
He has been using late versions of Windows and after he loaded the late IE
his Firefox went into super slow mode.

None of this is sufficient information to draw any definite conclusions,
but it is an accurate report.  Good Luck with it.

~FR~

I've *always* had problems with firefox (demonstrable problems, too, which, when I show them to my techie friends they're clueless)... most notably with memory leaks and things like that, slowing down my entire computer... but also with occasional crashes (usually because it's been open too long, I think), though that's dramatically reduced with 3.0. EVERY version of Firefox has been bloated, and over-used all of my computer's resources... and this is the first version that I've actually USED add-ons (one to change the 'theme' and another that converts advertisements to a different type of advertisement that pays toward offsetting carbon footprints).

I'm going to be switching to google chrome, likely as my main browser, after I get a chance to test it out some more. According to my friends it's much more lightweight than firefox or IE, which is my main desire for a browser, and it's also quick.

And I haven't ever understood this whole "Firefox is faster than IE" phenomena that everyone else gets. The exact opposite has always been true for me and remained consistent for ALL versions of both browsers since Firefox 1.0.

DedicatedDom40 -> RE: Firefox still sucks ! (6/14/2009 5:08:22 AM)

I use Mozilla's Seamonkey product myself, for the browser and email client all-in-one (a descendant from the old Netscape Communicator line)

Fitznicely -> RE: Firefox still sucks ! (6/14/2009 6:11:15 AM)

I've been using Opera for months and not had any issues with it at all until maybe a week or so ago when we started noticing problems with Facebook. That said, it's ONLY Facebook that has issues from THEIR side, meaning the coding of the pages. We've run into more problems with Opera, but I suspect they're LAN issues and nothing to do with it's actual performance.

We switched back to Firefox and it's noticably slower, but at least we can do those silly Facebook apps now.

I do like Safari, too. As coincidence would have it, the updater's just installed Safari 4 a few minutes ago, so I'm looking forward to playing with that. We've not used it much, but that's mainly down to Opera being so stable. don't NEED to use anything else.

As for IE...nah.

sadiemae -> RE: Firefox still sucks ! (6/14/2009 1:00:12 PM)

I love Firefox, but the newest Safari is really responsive, and other than a couple of problems I'm digging it a lot. I tried Flock as well, and I like it(I use a lot of social networking sites - which it's sort of designed for,) but so far I'm sticking with Firefox.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Firefox still sucks ! (6/14/2009 2:24:29 PM)

It might be the add-ons that are slowing it down. Add-ons can also cause crashes and lock ups with IE. Go to Tools, Intenet Options, select the programs tab, and then click on manage add ons. Highlight each add on that you want to disable, and then select disable at the bottom left. Also, the phishing filter for IE often slows things down. If you pratice safe web browsing, or have AVG (or similar software that checks sites), just go to Tools, phishing filter and turn it off. My IE is fast. One last thing. Ever so often you want to delete temp files and history. Go to Tools, Internet Options, select delete in the browsing history section, and then select delete all.
