Aneirin -> Hair !!! (12/3/2008 7:54:03 PM)

Ok, in desperation I ask here, wavy curly hair, how the hell does one keep it under control ?

The hair is long, when wet four inches below shoulder height, and manageable. Dry, it reduces in length to shoulder height, in other words, it waves and curls for a distance of four inches and no matter what I do, I cannot keep the stuff untangled. Run a wide tooth comb through it to tease out the tangles, move to the next bit, so far so good, but go over the lot again, it is just as bad as when first started, it has tangled and interlocked with the rest, often with spiral corkscrew type ringlety things.

Advice please ?

To note, I use Lush products to clean with, Tramp for the wash and Coolaulin for conditioner. Tramp, is a melissa, patchouli and oakmoss mix, Coolaulin is a coconut, benzoin and  vetivert mix,  so no chemicals or preservatives. The hair is ok for a couple of days,manageable,  but after that tangled it becomes, making one feel a new hair wash and condition very necessary. But, I read somewhere that it is not good to keep washing the hair due to washing the natural oils out, so I feel inclined to stick with that,but the hair becomes a mess.

So, I ask of anyone here that has wavy, curly, kinky hair, what can be done to keep the mess tidy between washes ?

(No smart ass comments about cutting it short, my hair has a lot of growing to do before I cut it )

try pulling it back into a ponytail, and secure it with 2 or 3 hair ties

Rinsing your hair with white vinegar will help to soften and detangle without removing natural oils. It also makes your hair shiney. BONUS ;)

I feel your pain. lol... My hair is past the middle of my back and as you can see, pretty wild.  I have to wash it, but I use good shampo and conditioners and change between a couple of them.  I use Infusium most of the time.  I wash, condition and then spray a leave in conditioner on it.  If I miss that step it will be wild and kind of frizy.  This conditioner for me acts almost like a gel would and gel is what I used before I found this little trick.  I then brush my hair with a wide toothed brush and leave it alone.  I don't brush it again.  I will run my fingers through it but anything more and it becomes halloween and I am the witch.

I can't get around washing it all the time because of the length and the curls.  My hair is soft to the touch and I don't have any more dryness than I would if I didn't.  I know, I tried that too.  Curly hair is basically broken hair.  Broken hair tangles.  You are better off to try washing it more often or using a leave in spray conditioner to detangle it, wet it and make it less unruly between washing.

Good luck!

Thanks GT, but I used to do that, but stopped due to a receeding hairline I was told could be due to the consitant pulling on the hair. I have however at times of madness gone for bunches at the side, which does not look too bad as the wavy tangling covers everything.

The other thing of course about a pony tail is what you find when you lift the tail on a pony, nothing but an asshole, I don't need to give people food for thought.

I like Garnier Fructisse products. Dont know if you can get them. They have shampoos and conditioners for wavy and curly hair. Also leave in conditioner. I also use a gel in my hair to define curls and keep it under control.

Two things drive me nuts & I melt over, when it comes to a lady, Long hair and Curls, natural curls at best & especially curls. =)

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Hair !!! (12/3/2008 8:08:29 PM)

Right now I am using a discontinued smoothing product from Kenra, but I have also used leave-in conditioners with lots of success.  Some folks swear by the Frizz-ease line, but to me, the stuff was like smearing motor oil on my hair.

Controlling the heat and speed of drying makes a big difference.  If you can keep combing it out until it's dry, at least some of the curl will calm down and redirect.

To this day, anyone that pulls my hair is risking injury.... I just flash back to being a little girl with naturally curly hair, having it yanked out by mom's comb!

Okay, someone may have said this as I have not read the entire thread, but Aveda Sap Moss shampoo and conditioner will help a ton. I have very wavy hair that used to be brittle and just...bleh. I really recommend the Aveda lines (they will run you a fine price), and then a nice finishing product like their "brilliant" styling creme. Best wishes with it though, and if if you are tired of the waves, a straightner can give you a new image for some nights. Now excuse me while I got reassure myself that I'm straight.

GT, don't be telling him that shit!
Next thing you know he'll be a "neighborhood activist" or "community organiser."
Sheesh!

I hate frizz ease stuff... it is oil.  There is a um... small um detangler but I can't remember the name of it that we used on my um's hair that worked well and didn't leave a residue.  But I love this light leave in conditioner.  It will help set the curl so it is actually a curl and not frizz.  Also if you haven't had a cut in a while, the breakage can cause it to tangle more.  A small trim will do wonders.

Aneirin -> RE: Hair !!! (12/3/2008 8:15:38 PM)

Thank you Lockit, good information, I will bear in mind.

Me being me, I research everything and I know the hair I have is oval in cross section, whereas straight hair is circular in cross section, the circular hair type being that of straight hair is stronger than oval type, but oval type has more springyness, and don't I know it. I am the only one of my generation that has wild gypo type hair, although others in my family, males included have long hair. I keep threatening to straighten it and have with irons once or twice, but the first hint of water, dampness or rain, ringlets I get.

sabathiel -> RE: Hair !!! (12/3/2008 8:18:06 PM)

Well yeah, rule #1 when you have straightened curly/wave hair is to avoid water...otherwise your carriage turns into a pumpkin!

Lockit -> RE: Hair !!! (12/3/2008 8:19:46 PM)

Ahhhh there is help for that too!  I got a conaire straigtener and use that some days and did so on my trip here because I knew I might be on the road a couple days.  So if it was straight I would look less trashed on the road and have less of a burden with it.  I found that even when I sprayed a lil water mist on it... to test it, that my hair stayed straight and smooth.  I am like you... any hint of moisture and the hair does this three feet out the side of my head thing.  The straightener has been a true help and I love being able to have a different look once in a while.

Ouidad products.

My hair is naturally curly...like corkscrews, but to make it worse, it's also frizzy and very light in weight.  I keep it straight by having it chemically processed every 3 months.  But on occasion I let it grow out and wear it curly for a while to give it a break from the chemicals.  The best products I have ever found (after a lifetime of trying every possible product out there) are put out by Ouidad.  The stuff is a little bit pricey, but you don't need to use gobs of it, and it's very rich, so it lasts a long time.  You might want to check out the site Ouidad.com. There is a full explanation of all the products and what they are each used for.  The products are fantastic, and made specifically for people with curly hair.

Also for tangling issues, don't rub your curls with the towel to dry your hair, instead gently squeeze the water out of your wet hair with the towel, then put your styling product/s in by smearing them on your hands and gently grabbing sections of hair and squeezing it, as if to scrunch your hair, and just finger through it to take out any tangles.  The worse thing you can do with curly hair is take a brush or comb to it.

And the best thing is to have it cut in layers, this way you don't lose any of the length, but you take out some of the bulk which also cuts back on all the tangling.

I also use almond oil on my hair about once a month....slop it all over, apply heat for 15 minutes then shampoo it out.  It works very nicely to smooth things out.
