Actually you can see if your area has a Performance Learning Center, which is a different approach to teaching those in High School. Just google PLC or Performance Learning Center, as they are supported by http://www.gatesfoundation.org/about/Pages/overview.aspx which supports Global and US programs.

Welllllllll, quite honestly, my first choice is one that is 'unable' to accept 'charitable donations' ( the local school system here [:'(] ), outside of that though I would start with the local FOP, then move on to state law enforcement agencies, the fire dept's, the hospitals, hospice, animal shelter/rescue ( of all kinds, small/large/domestic/wild ). One of my favorite charities that I would include is the Make a Wish Foundation. We also have a local agency here for the prevention of teenage pregnancy which utilizes teenage volunteers who offer to 'be a parent for a day' for families who can't afford child care. It's a fantastic organization and it really helps teenagers understand what being a parent really means.

After all that, I guess I would look around at the bigger charities like the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Master Orion [:)]
I have heard of the PLC's and as of this time,  there are none even close to where I live [:o], though that really does not matter when you realize that they still accept donations lol,   no matter what area the donation comes from.
You are correct though, it is a wonderful organization.

foundation for sarcoidosis research
they could only use the half the interest and not the main amount
and put the other half back with the main amount to let it grow more more for ever
and then if they find a cure put it to another research item

Its not a charity-its a loan to help someone start a business in a developing country. I think 98% of the money is repaid. If you give someone money in a way that allows them to create more money and a better way to support themselves and their families on a long term basis in perpetuity, then you've given them a fishing rod and lures...not just the fish.

Local charities, resource groups and day centres, carers aid and youth projects. It seems to me so much money goes to the national charities that are supported by the media etc when local charities are so underfunded. Its like in sports night when Natalie says she gives her money to aids and Dan says "if I were dying of some unpopular illness i would be wondering where my ribbon, why arent children throwing slumber parties for me".

Yeah even with all the money that Gates pumped into it, there are still many areas that do not have them. My son was bored by regular school, would flip back and forth from A's to C's. Once in a PLC, he marked exceptional and completed his assignments early so that he could start taking college and voc courses. They way they have it set up, like you are going to work at an office and working in a team, helps amazingly well to prepare teenagers for business jobs.

They also have early learning centers but those are very limited.

I am just a big believer that we the citizens have to become involved and engaged in bettering the education in this country. I look at many of the charities people have listed and believe that by having a better educated citizenry, many would not be as needed or have more funds because of better incomes from those that donate.

There is a local charity that has local kids come in and stay after school until the parents get home. They do homework, get tutoring and have computers available. They just sent the first two kids off to college. Needless to say, this charity is based in a very low income area, with high crime and gangs and violence.  The same charity sends teams to Honduras for surgical medical missions - i have gone twice and spent a week asssisting surgeons pulling mouths of rotten teeth, fixing cleft lips, and basically taking care of whatever comes in. Other mission teams build houses - that for Americans would be classified as the utility shed - but they have concrete floors!!!
They would get lot of the money.

The other charity i would fund relates to parrots - specifically unwanted and abused parrots. They live for (some of them) for 60 years if taken care of properly, and people buy them without much thought, get tired of the perpetual 3 year old in their house, the mess and the noise, and try to dump them on strangers. I see ads in the paper for large birds, one or two  years old and know that someone is tired of their impulse buy. There are many santuraries and rehoming rescues, underfunded and over supplied with birds that could certainly use the money.
And the crying shame of these animals is that they are extremely intelligent - able to reason, but not able to understand why their flock member abandoned them.  Makes me want to weep![:o]

i always wanted to start an organization for pregnant teens.  It would be geared towards keeping the family intact so the mother would not have to give up her child or have an abortion.    Education and skill training would be the focus so the mother had a support system to help her eventually be able to be on her own supporting her child.

St Judes without a doubt.

i once heard of a charity where they helped children who were terminally ill and abandoned by their parents.  i would love to not just donate the money to help them, but be a part of giving these children the love they deserve before leaving this world.  If i had an endless supply of money it would free me up to do this kind of work.

Battered women's shelters and homeless shelters.

Charter schools which take no public money and are thus as free as possible to teach honest history, science, logic, and other thinking skills ... you know, all those things that don't seem much taught anymore.

Otherwise, I would continue to run my business ... providing an excellent product/service that serves my customers far beyond the price they pay for it, creating jobs, and generally helping people live a better life. It's not charity, but of endless social value.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: If you had an endless supply of money which charity needs would you help? (6/6/2011 4:51:32 PM)

That's really a pretty dumb question. If  I had an endless supply of money, I'd just give a suitcase full of $1000 bills to everybody on the planet on a monthly basis.

I mean if the money is unlimited, why on earth would you chose?

Now if I had a large, but limited amount of money I'd give to help runaways; sexually abused children and teens; and, of course, the Diabetes Association.

>> So I'm self-centered in my charity choices, sue me. I'm 18, I'm supposed to be self-centered!

playfulotter -> RE: If you had an endless supply of money which charity needs would you help? (6/6/2011 5:28:21 PM)

HeatherMcLeather is right if it was endless...but off the top of my head I would give a lot to the "World Wildlife Fund" and a lot of local animal charities.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: If you had an endless supply of money which charity needs would you help? (6/7/2011 11:09:42 PM)

The local library, the local volunteer department, local police department. The last I'd like to supply with an ongoing number of new teddy bears so they could give them away whenever a call involves a kid. Even after a routine fender bender or encounter with deer, kids are shaken up and would appreciate being handed a bear while the parent deals with the paperwork.

Shriners Hospitals... they do absolutely amazing work in and out of the hospital.

Beyond that, I would start my own charity.

Kana -> RE: If you had an endless supply of money which charity needs would you help? (6/8/2011 2:02:26 PM)

I'd give to Uniself

littlewonder -> RE: If you had an endless supply of money which charity needs would you help? (6/8/2011 3:03:35 PM)

Education for those not in reach of other aid.
You know, working middle class, cant afford an education outright, but have a job and are just making ends meet, so they are not eligible for hand-outs,
"entitilements" and charity.

calamitysandra -> RE: If you had an endless supply of money which charity needs would you help? (6/8/2011 3:57:44 PM)

Nobody would go hungry, without shelter, or clothes.
Access to clean water and medical care for all.
Education and a safe environment for every child.
Large libraries, laptops and free internet all over the world.
Funding of various research, from medical to clean energy.
Projects to help abandoned and abused pets, as well as help for endangered wild animals.
Work for a healthy and clean environment.

And many, many other things that elude me right now.

And yes, Pahunk, I would take them all to Disneyworld.
