I know sometimes the schools are giving away their laptops, and I know that there's some programs where if you buy one they donate one to someone. And of course there's online auctions and buying it on sale and stuff, but I was really hoping to find ways that were so cheap it was almost like stealing it lol.

Your intent is good...but really, if a family is needy i would suggest things other than a laptop

Yeah, Good point, But sometimes it's for a kid who has to share the pc to much and don't get to do much for their own fun, or Sometimes it's so a kid can do their homework on it, ect evt.

i agree...but it would be putting mom and dad in a position where there an internet bill to be paid every month

Ok, well how about if they already have internet connection then? Since I know one family who has internet connection, but all 4 of them share one pc?

It wouldn't have to be connected to the internet. Or, you could get it to a college student, and they could use the connection at school. There's not many, but there are homeless college students that just fly under the radar... a laptop could make a huge difference in their grades. The hardest thing to do would be finding them- many colleges are unaware of the homeless student population, since many of them bounce around friends houses, shower at the gym, and nap at the library while studying.

well tell ya what... if the laptop i'm using is still running when i get my main repaired and returned i'm more than willing to send you the one i'm currently using, it doesn't have a battery and it's not the newest thing but it does work.

I just thought of something. The last time I was in Goodwill...(yeah, I'm a bargain shopper, ok?) I read an announcement that said they do not accept computers as donations, and if you gave them one it would go in the trash. Could you contact your local Goodwill(s) and ask them to call you when they get some?

craigslist.com has giveaways & sometimes they have pc's for free.

Yeah the battery isn't a problem and can usually find them listed on craigslist (try there for cheap computers to that's how i found this one... i paid like 170 for it) i am just going to have to clear files from it and run a ram sweeper and such it's old which is the only real reason i'm afraid of it dying.

Ask offices for obsolete desktops such as a Pentium 3 or similar. Install a Linux system onto the hard drive. Most Linux systems are free to download and burn onto CD or DVD.

Some of the larger corporations pay vendors to pick up their olds pcs. Maybe you could contact one in your area.
