I remember an episode of The Twilight Zone (the in-color version from the 80s) where missing items like that which mysteriously re-appear where one swears they've already looked was explained... It seems as we pass though time minute by minute, each minute is constructed down to every last detail, by a race of creatures who exists in time slightly ahead of us. Missing keys, and things like that, are simply errors made by the 'creatures' that are responsible for assuring the small details of time are in place as we prepare to move along though it. When its discovered an error has occurred (forgetting to put the car keys where they are supposed to be), its always fixed in a later minute, and that's why we find a missing item in a place where we swear we've already looked... Hey, I thought I was an interesting story...
