defiantbadgirl -> a question for CPA's or those who know them well (12/4/2008 1:07:41 PM)

How many tries did it take to pass the certification exam? How long did it take to find employment after becoming certified? Was the starting salary a living wage (enough to live on and make student loan payments)?

My sister-in-law passed hers on the first try.  She already had a job at an accounting firm where she had been working while she was in school.

My ex-husbands ex was a book keeper for a small firm for quite awhile, while she was going to school to become a CPA. Now she is a full partner. She isn't getting rich but she does okay.

Much like any other profession, how much you make is directly affected by how hard you are willing to work.

I've done a fair amount of work for the big accounting firms and passing the CPA seems to be a first or second try thing. I don't hear anywhere near he angst about it that I have about the bar exam.

I don't think CPA salaries are abnormally low for state licensed professionals so I'd expect to make mid to high 5 figures pretty quick.

I've known people who passed it on the first try and others that took a couple of times to do it. I don't know what CPA's make but I know there's a bit of a shortage (or there was) of accountants in our area. I work in the acct. department at my company and we have had a hard time filling positions the past couple of years.
