Actually you can train a cat just like you train a dog, but you have to start early and it is done by taking behaviors they already display and reinforcing them with a reward and word. I have trained cats in the past to come when called, walk on a leash, sit on command, sit up/beg on command, move to specific places I want them ( like chair for grooming), get down from places by order, and to sheath claws when they are trying to pet back and not to claw furniture. It does take patience, Lots of Patience. But it can be done. there is one guy who has a mob of cats that he has trained to walk tightropes, push baby carriages (toy), balance on balls etc. As long as a cat thinks it is fun, they will learn. Not all cats will think it is fun however. Remember they do learn how to wake us up for food, and to signal when they want to go out. poenkitten
