I don't think that subs without dom/mes find themselves in abusive relationships. I think masochists without trustworthy sadists do. If it's a pain thing, you need the pain to get someplace then you'll look for someone to provide you with the pain. Okay, you may not get off on the pain but if you seek out pain, I think you more closely fit into the masochist label than not.
Although it ought to go without saying, that obviously one can be both.
Even I, who does not identify as a masochist, would have to agree with what you said here.
