I am sitting here thinking about the holiday season and what it means to me.
Even as a child, I always realized there was so much more to the holidays than
a Christmas tree and running around buying presents.
I used to feel like Linus in the Charlie Brown Christmas show.
{Actually I still do}

For me it's a season of joy, hope, reflection, sharing, dreams and a final call to the current year.
It is a time to think about  love and appreciate family, friends, loved ones still here and those waiting for me in the next life.
It is a time for me to be grateful for what I have and my life, and yet feel sad for those that
are worse off and suffering.

Many of us will be cutting back on the trappings of gift buying, but that has never been a big
thing for me.
I am hoping that I will see people being generous with not only their money and contributions,
food drives, etc. BUT with their time and spirit.

As our economy continues to crumble, I think about the holidays with that scene from "A Christmas Carol"  with Bob Cratchit and little Tiny Tim.
They were one of the happiest families I have ever seen in the media.
They were very poor, but they were a happy and loving family with big hearts.
They had each other, and that was really enough.
Don't most of us love watching little Tiny Tim say "GOD Bless us everyone"?.
Some of us celebrate Christmas, some Kwanza, some Hannaka, other religions and practices,
and some celebrate none of the above.

It really doesn't matter in which way you celebrate, I am wondering what does the "Holiday Season" mean to you, without the materialism, outward trappings and decorations, running around and stressing?

This is the first time in years I've actually looked forward to Christmas.

I'm now doing a job I love which gives great vacations but rubbish salary, instead of a job that bored me which allowed few holidays but brought in a lot of money.  Which means I can be less generous with cash, but can be more generous with my time.

This time of year is hard for me because my wonderful grandmother died several years ago between Christmas and New Year.  She wouldn't want me to mourn and withdraw from the world, so I don't.  But I do feel sad, and I miss her dreadfully around this time.  This tends to make me feel more introverted and less enthusiastic about the fun and games surrounding the big day.

But this year we have a new baby.  She will be 6 weeks old at christmas, and she is the start of a new generation.  I would have loved my grandma to have met her great great grand-daughter, but I'm loving watching my parents revelling in their new great grand-daughter.

I think it will be a quiet family christmas, but for the first time in years I'm looking forward to it.

Oh lordy ....it is so hard to be humble.

Mia, timely post.  I have a lettter written, a paper one.  All ready to go.  I dont know weather to mail it.  For now, I wont go into the details.
But I cant decide to mail it.   It could be timely, or not.
What to do?

Last year, I surprised my family.... I wish I could do so again.   This cold weather taxes me.  It literally is 40 degrees in my kitchen.  I only heat 3 rooms.  One day years ago, the police wanted to ask me some questions, they always do so at a kitchen table so they can see your hands.  Somehow they did not stay long. I think my kitchen was too cold for them.  LOL.

For a long time many disliked the over commercialism.  I now find the sarcasm xmas songs as crude.   I have tho been putting dish sateilite holiday music on.  even if you dont have the serice, the dish will get this and 3 channles in for free.
the music is pretty good on it.

I am sort of surprised to learn there are people living in the US with no heat.   tho I do wonder how they get online...????  PA toll roads going up 25%.  in 2004 they went up 40+%.   they claim in will bring in x amount of money.  they arrogance of the manager is astounding!   he says people will pay this to use a good road! (instead of a free road)

I've always had a love/hate relationship with Christmas.

Though I don't have the religious sentiment that many do, for it, I still find the gross, overblown, commercialism of it disgusting. I avoid the malls like the very plague, I won't listen to music radio stations. I want to lob grenades at yards full of cheap ugly decorations, but I do love a few tasteful lights to send out a welcoming glow. Whomever thought those horrid inflatable lawn things were a good idea should be shot, several times, with rock salt.

However, as much as I am sick of it by December 25th, I love the family time, the memories of time with family now gone. The gifts get forgotten, it's the things like my daughter as a toddler, getting busted by my grandmother, sticking her finger in a pumpkin pie. That vision of my beautiful loving grandmother waving her spatula at my wide eyed little sneak still brings a smile. Just things like that, enjoying family. That's my sanity's survival for this time of year.

But I still LOVE presents!!! Especially those little boxes.....

Awww PA,  you are a sweetheart. I've already got two ponies. In truth, I have so much I cannot think of one material thing I could reasonably ask for. Unless it would be more $$ to pay for feeding the two horses.....

It's a little extra special for me this year because, for the past 20 years now, I've switched jobs a few times and work in the medical profession where taking time off around the holidays was approved by seniority and working on the holidays, at least half the holidays was mandatory.  Couple that with allowing my UM's to go to their father's in another state for holiday vacations as my compensation for moving them TO another state away from him, I counted back, and I have not spent the Christmas holiday with my now adult UM's in 12 years now because I either had to work on Christmas Day and/or the weeks before and after.  I have managed to sneak in a couple of quick visits that weren't ON Christmas, but we pretended it was and had our own little Christmas, but usually, I spent Christmas either working then alone or with my sister's family, but rarely my own.

Well, this year, my job is one that does not require us to work on the holidays and the work load is very small the weeks around, so I HAVE THE WHOLE WEEK OFF!!!!!   And gas prices are too good to be true, so I won't be spending all the present money on gas to get there and back.  Woo hoo!!!

I have enjoyed reading the replies.
It is great to be able to enjoy the holiday season, without getting
caught up, stressing out, and in debt or over your head.

windchymes, I agree that it is great that gas has gone down.
I can spend the few dollars I am saving on groceries, and it is so much

cheaper to go visiting.
