DragonNphoenix -> Electro devices used for branding (12/26/2005 10:35:19 PM)

We are in search of the best means for branding. We have been told that some electro devices could work. Does anyone have any input on this? This is something that we have descussed and looked into all the health issues around it already.

Thank you

What you are looking for is a cauterizing pen (cautery). It is also been referred to as a branding pen.

Look about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Be sure to do your research before branding. I know you say you have in your post, but be sure you know what you are getting into. Nasty infections can happen. Scars that will last a lifetime. They have figured out how to remove tattoos for the most part, but only skin graphs can cover scarring.

Warning!

THIS SITE CONTAINS MANY NASTY LITTLE ITEMS THAT SHOULD NEVER BE USED BY A NOVICE!!!!! If you plan to experiment with advanced items be sure you have a good medical plan, live close to an ER & in a worse case scenario... have a good attorney

Be Well

You can always use the old fassion meathod that flesh artists like us perfer, and use a heated up peice of metal.

Call me a traditionalist.

A razor blade and a blow torch is the most common meathod. Or getting some thin gague sheet metal, cut and bent to shape works well too. Just heat it up and TSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Delightful.

I'm far from expert at branding, in fact, I've never done it. However, I have learned a bit about it from somebody who really knows his shit. If you're actually going to do it, you'd do well to learn from somebody who also really knows their shit. A good brand looks really cool, a bad brand looks... well, not so cool.

As luck would have it, I just attended a branding class taught by Fakir not three weeks ago. The method he taught is to use very thin (.015") stainless sheet metal cut into inch wide strips that are bent to form your shapes. Rather than making a single striker in a very intricate shape, make several peices that together create your design. Hold the brand with vice grips, and heat to a nice cherry red with a propane torch.

The scar will be probably triple the width of your brand, so a very fine brand is prefferable. And it is permanent, so you should be very certain of any design you brand onto yourself or another.

The most important part of branding, is to strike consistently. The best way to practice is with white corregated cardboard. A proper strike will burn all the way through the first layer, but no further. You should practice lots.

As far as healing goes, keep it covered with gauze till it scabs, then keep it clean and dry. To encourage a nice keloid, pick at the scabs. The longer the heal time, the better the scar.

[laugh] Damn it, Nick. You are a master of understatement.

In the dictionary under "knows his shit" is a picture of Cleo and Fakir. They have got to be some of the coolest people and the best teachers in the Scene.

Indeed, it was one of the funnest and most informative classes I've attended so far. I'm still sad that I missed the second day. But it was still a great time.

Fakir and Cleo are good people. I hope they remain in the community for a good long time.

I went to a branding ceremony last year at Dom Con in LA. They used a soldering iron. It worked well.

Please please please don't create open wounds with a soldering iron!!!!!!  You saw the initial wound only.  You did not see the subsequent infected wound, or the poor line work and keloids that may have resulted (and this comes from seeing it on several folks who like to do that to themselves.)

A Bovie pen, a disposable STERILE medical device should be employed if you don't have the luxury of having your own EC generator (they run in the thousands!)  They can readily be obtained through www.kinkymedical.com for less than $25 a unit.
