I am a stellar gardener, veggies, flowers, herbs---outside. Inside I am the curse of guaranteed quick and painful death. I want to start growing herbs on My lovely kitchen window, I've made a few attempts (as the sill is a tad narrow)--but to little avail. Any suggestions? ( yes Domina's aren't always perfection and do on occasion ask for help)

strawberry pots don't take up any room at all and you can plant about five or six different type of herbs in it and see which ones work for you... rosemary is pretty much fail-safe in any type of pot or climate. i've also had tremendous luck with basil, and peppermint.

If you are using one of those kits i am not suprised they are not growning well for you. The dirt is awful, as are the seeds. I have always had success by using soil treated with a plant food. Bury the seeds as per the package directions, water well and cover with Saran wrap for a few days...but keep them in the sun.

I'm more consistent than you. I kill plants indoors or outdoors. My only advice to you is to not listen to a damn thing I say about horticulture (that word sounds kinda dirty).

What kind of lighting do you have inside your house? And how well is the indoor temperature maintained? What kind of water do you use? I advise asking for some information at a local nursery for details specific to your climate.

Herbs? Windowsills? What kind of herbs? Yeah like, growing herbs on your windowsills is like, erm.. far out, and really groovy and all that and I know some heads who grow their herbs on their windowsills.. Much cheaper than buying the stuff. I know you need sunlamps and some tin foil, but not sure what next because my friends roll all my joints and.. But watch out for the cops, because they can be really heavy and that would be like a bad trip. You have a hippy commune nearby? Or maybe a weekend in Amsterdam? If you get stuck PM me on the other side.. I know some Rastafarians... they know their stuff.. Niceness to ya...

YOU are a true gem! Actually much more boring than that--more along the lines of oregano, parsley, rosemary things like that. (yes I know, I'm yawner in some respects!~ :>) )

Cat - if they get too much sun - they fry. If there is too much temperature fluctuation - they die. Try to monitor they conditions at the window for a bit and modify whatever you have to.

The biggests mistake people make when growing herbs inside is they water to much. If you start to have little flies buzzing around that is a good sign you are watering to much. Also, if you are using city tap water, chances are it is treated with chorine and in small containers of soil it will build up and kill your plants, let the water sit openned for a few days to get rid of it. If you have a water softner that will kill your plants also. Make sure they get plenty of light, I just use a floresent (?) bulb above my sink. and that seems to work well. Also are you growing all of your herbs in the same container? If you are try separateing them, as not every plant enjoys growing in the same soil as others in such a small place. Rosemary does very well in a larger container when grown by itself, when planted with others it will die off. (It's the spoiled child of the herb world) Depending on the type of oregano you are growing, some like to grow more like a bush then a small plant ( I plant Greek Oregano and it spreads out all over the container taking over the whole thing, so nothing else will grow, it's the bully of the herb world) As for parsely, well it's basically a big baby and if anything starts to crowd it, it will throw a fit and die off (proof the meek will never take over) Hopes this helps and if you need any other help drop me line

ahhhh i looove growing things :D house sub is right, sometimes it can have alot to do with watering. overwatering will kill just like underwatering will. and separating the plants into their own containers is good, too. some plants like lots of water, some like not so much, but if they share soil, it all gets whatever whater you give it. dunno if it's just me, but if you end up keepign them on the counter, say they outgrow the sill or whatever, dont put them near your microwave. =p it's always been my experience that microwaves make plants unhappy. and sometimes it can have something to do with stuff in your house. one house i lived in killed any plant that was ever brought into it. EVER. we had a little accidental experiment where two of the same type of plant ended up one at that house and the other at a friend's house, and the one at our house died within two days of being brought in, while the other kept going for about two months or so (before the friend accidentally killed it =p) there was something there, it was an old house. maybe the water was bad, maaaybe it was the ghost, who knows =p haha

I have sage and rosemary growing at home here and find they are NOT doing too well. Could be from the lack of sun with the shorter days. I'm wondering if I can cut off a piece and set it in water and it will reroot so that I can replant it? Is that an okay thing to do with those two types of herbs?

When you cut it, cut it at an angle and make sure the water is room temp before you place the shoot in the water

Try a window that faces the south. Also add a plastic or glass for greenhouse effect. Gosh...if tap water is bad for plants, i wonder what it does to people
